Back to the Mapper!

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone.

I've recently just got back into playing around with RPG maker VX (except the difference this time is i am using Ace of course).
I thought i would put some screenshots up to show you some of the maps I've been messing around with. ^_^

I haven't started any projects yet... but i do have some fun ideas for something to start with.

Anyway here is some of my test screens! I think i am getting the hang of it again. considering i haven't touched the map making function in years and years and years. :D

Note: The screenshots are blended shots from both in-game and in-editor. In-game has a black box around it making it stand out

I think my world map needs some work... but then I've never used world maps very much.

Very nice looking maps, I particularly like the atmosphere the dungeon gives off. With regards to the castle, who is it home to, and does that (section of) map lead to anything in particular. Personally, I would add some guards either patrolling the main alley and the surrounding land or stationed atop the wall. The world map isn't bad, but there could be a little more space (maybe one tile) between the mainland and the ice continent (although that is purely personal preference). Other than that, congrats on some nice work.

Hey Keirebu,

Thanks for the reply.

To be honest i was not going to add much detail in forms of characters . I don't have any story or direction yet and was purely for testing my mapping skills after about 5 years of absence really. ^_^
The world map was just another test hence why a lot of the continents are so close together. ;)

I can assure you that if and when i decide to make a game the castle will have story and life and the world map will be better   (Though i rarely use world maps as mentioned above so it's something i can work on more).

Thank you for the feedback. Much appreciated:)  I am glad you like it.

These are really great. The usage of space is perfect and flows well, the maps are not oversized as there's not a lot of unused space. The change in tiles to break up the path ways looks fantastic as you've added some natural growth on both grass and man-made tile. Honestly I wish more RTP maps were made like this.

Personally I like the world map, most of the old console RPG games would give you a fair view of the world around you so this is a great change from large world maps. The bridge is pretty long though, so having a break in the middle of it with a small tile of land may be something to look into.

Really well done, would like to see more of your work.

Hey CVincent,

First of all, Thank you very much for the response. Much appreciated. ^_^

Regarding map size, I've been known to make large maps work with little unused space :P . However though, I quite prefer a smaller manageable section. ^_^

Regarding tiles. I've always believed that a good map needs to have a natural look to it. Growth on man-made tiles (especially ares where nature is clawing it's space back), Rugged mountain sides. wild and unpredictable terrain, Rivers that don't run in straight lines (unless man made) etc. I'm always an artist before a designer so detail is always key.  :D

I guess now i been playing around with it i quite enjoy the idea of a world map for long travels and stuff. Ha-ha yeah, now that you mention it that is quite a long bridge  . I will bare that in mind.

Thank you again! I hope not to disappoint.
