Some of my work. Doing a remake of Dragon Warrior.

Recommended Posts

Just figured I'd get some feedback, I'm still learning parallax but doing my best. Also looking for someone to help me with possibly making a video for the intro and maybe the ending. I'm remaking the original Dragon Warrior from NES/SNES.

I'm going to be honest, the way that some of the shadows have come out make everything look as though it's floating. I'm not sure as to whether or not it's an aesthetic choice on your part, but it doesn't really click for me. Similarly with your title screen, perhaps it would be better to create a background in your own style rather than use the rtp, which has a specific style, and the slightly brighter and "flatter" foreground image. Perhaps changing the contrast would help?

Cool maps, I love all the detail.  I agree the shadows detract from showing everything off well.  For example in the 3rd image the left wall has a shadow on the right, and the table next to it has a shadow on the left.  And the doorway leading up from there has so many colors from the shadow that it took me a minute to figure out it was a doorway and that it was the same floor pattern as the rest of the room.  I think if you rein in the shadows and make them more consistent directionally it would look great.

Sadly the person who did my title screen is no longer able to come online, so I can't get it fixed. And i'll take your advice on the shadows xoferew.

Well I want the shadows to make the walls have some depth as to not look flat like most ppl do in their projects.

I loved Dragon Warrior! I gotta say, those maps are awesome, they have a very nostalgic feel to them! Great job!!

I agree fully with this. The furniture looks weird in that bakery room because of the undershadow mostly. You wouldn't have that much shadow underneath a standing unit since the shadow would be lost underneath it.

It's not a preference, it's an artistic crtique and would make your furniture look better if you had removed the under shadow slightly (remove where it shows the legs and such to show it's sitting on the ground) and maybe reduce the transparency so it wasn't as dark. The room itself looks lit up, so the shadows shouldn't be that dark in the center of the room and such :)

Your maps do look great! In the big hall one, that bit of L shaped shadow looks a little strange sitting in the middle of the room. I assume you'll show that it is a roof or something above it?

The player would assume there is something above them, but fromt he map alone, it seems a little weird.

Overall though, your mapping skills are great :) You have the right amount of furniture I'd say to make it homely, but not cluttered.

Also, the tables in the backery/kitchen area - are they meant to be through the wall?

I use a script for those.. the ceiling covers them up with it. And that shadow in the hall is the fountain.. i have it animated as an object.. it doesn't show up in Photoshop. And I changed the shadows.. I'll post up newer photos when I get more stuff fixed and finished.
