Kickstarter and pay to use scripts

Recommended Posts

Firstly, not sure if I should post this here

I have a game using a script that requires a usage license if one wishes to use it for a for profit game. (if the game is free ware, then a usage license is not required)

However, say I were to make a demo featuring the script and use that in a kickstarter campaign to illicit funds which would then upon succession, go into purchasing the license.

Would I get in trouble using that script in the campaign without a license ?

Can third party scripts be used in kickstarter campaigns in general?

Thank you

Sounds like you should ask the person who made the script.  Suppose they discovered your kickstarter campaign and got annoyed, it might be complicated trying to continue your project.

And I think you mean "elicit funds" rather than "illicit" which means illegal.  ^_^

Although it's only a demo, I would personally think that it would be okay, however as xoferew says, it would be best to contact the owner about the matter incase they see your kickstarter demo as a start to a project and might think you intend on using the script freely without any paid usage - since kickstarter is making you money, it might be considered commercial, meaning you might need a license.

If you are making a free game but are using a kickstarter, the scripter might see it as profit still and might consider that commercial, even if it's only a funding.

If you are making a commercial game later, then the scripter might take it the wrong way and think otherwise.

It's always best to ask before doing anything to avoid trouble and misunderstanding.

Absolutely not, commercial is commercial is commercial, kickstarter IS commercializing something even tho the vehicle isn't the common "give me money here's the product", but kickstater, patreon, croudraising and something like that is still commercial since you're getting paid for the game, therefore, no I wouldn't recommend it, you can however like pointed out, ask the person who did the script to allow you to use it, agree on a value and pay him when available or have a free license for X months and pay him after.
