Let's be brutally honest for a moment. Anyone who'd purposefully sign up for an adventurer, either through an organization or just word of mouth, is probably any of the following:

Kleptomaniac/Loot hound

Violently repressed psychopath

Sociopath of varying colors

Egomaniac

Religious zealot, in the event the adventurer constitutes obtaining a religious MacGuffin or pilgrimage

Death seeker

Sadomasochist

Collector of artifacts, trophies, books, etc

Idiotic/insane

Criminals working off their sentence/just escaped from prison and have nothing else to do/running from the law

My question is are there any other people who'd purposefully sign up for an adventurer full of mutilation, pain, and probably death? This is for the sake of characterization of course, as my entire game's party is full of the above characters.

Is this adventure advertised as something that will make the world a better place, or just an opportunity to grab stuff?

Maybe just a mercenary who good at killing monsters and wants some extra loot? Is that a loot-hound?

Honestly, if you analyze a lot of rpg characters you'll find traits like those.

They're even more apparent in "adventure" games, which I mention share a name with the topic of this post. Think Guybrush threepwood of the monkey island games or similar characters.

Though mostly traits like egomania and kleptomania are used for comedic purposes. I'd like to see games that explore those ideas in a more serious tone.

I guess there's always the "desperate for money because he's supporting his twelve little orphan siblings, you thought he was greedy but surprise, he's totally self-sacrificing!  And he just stole your cash!  D'oh!"

There's also the adventurer that just likes to adventure. Some people enjoy traveling and seeing the world. Money and fame is a bonus for them.

There is also the dutiful adventurer. Bound by either a promise, a duty or whatever (take Steiner in FFIX for example).

Someone might be seeking answers. Trapped in a boring life and wanting to escape and found out what the world is really like - most apparent in either young nobles who want to "be normal and have fun" or someone who either has amnesia or someone who has been told such and such but found it it was lies and want to see for themselves (Ringabel and Edea from Bravely Default as an example)

Lastly, someone might be searching for someone/something they lost. A relative maybe, or a long lost family member. Someone might even be searching for a lover/the "one" by seeking out people and connections.

It kind of reminds me of the movie The Watchmen. For those that are unfamiliar, it was an very realistic take on what a superhero's personality would really be like. A couple of them were sociopaths, too.

Also, there's always the people that sign up without really thinking through what they're actually signing up for. They think it'll be fun and exciting, and soon find themselves crying in a fetal position. Those adventurers are the meat shields. Or bait.   ;)

What, nobody ever heard to the Call to Adventure, or the 3 Act Structure? Sometimes, people have to go on an adventure or journey out of necessity, not out of boredom. If your story revolves around a main character that does what they do 'just because they can', you have a bad main character.

Also sadomasocism is usually reserved for sexuality, it's not a terribly common fetish, and it's pretty rare for someone to be both. At either rate, it's not a trait common to characters in any media.

All my characters have a single goal in mind. Even the ones that seem like they're just along for the ride have their reasons.

A lot of RPG's are like that. They have a common bond that unites them.

What sort of weird games have you been playing and finding stereotypes like these for adventurers?

I'd love to see a game where that was your party. Every idea where the main character is insane or antagonistic somehow always comes back to this with me: A Batman game where you play as the Joker. Other bad guys would be your other party members.

No further elaboration required.  B)

I like the idea of a party member joining you because of another party member did something to them/their family and silently seek revenge.

Hope from FFXII was a pain in the ass throughout the start of the game, but he had amazing character development.

I think what you really got to wonder is, in what kind of society or world is "adventurer" an actual valid job description? How do you have random monsters roaming the countryside unchecked by any kind of army or at least town militia while still having happy little towns that aren't constantly under siege? How do you have ruins or dungeons still unexplored and inhabited by random monsters and treasures?

Closest thing we had in real life were explorers, and explorers didn't just go out and fight monsters, they had to plan expeditions far in advance and could have crews of support staff and planned their routes carefully. It might be fun to spin an adventuring party that way, with a trip to mostly unknown territory, or something like The Oregon Trail, or even people going on a safari or going caving. Really "adventurer" is such a vague term and could refer to all those things, and doesn't need to mean to go out and kill monsters or loot dungeons.

Edit: Though thinking about it, if you are just talking about how dangerous it is and people would have to be crazy to sign up for it, what does that say about all the solders, rescue workers, miners, and other dangerous jobs in real life? Do you really mean to say that everyone who does all those things are nuts too?
