Survival Game help here!

Recommended Posts

So I had this idea of a survival "horror" game with zombies, right? Well I might not include the zombies cause it comes out as a cliche but anyway...Character is locked in his room when he/she hears the news that the outbreak begun and stuff like that so he/she starts leaving his house to go wherever (didn't think on this part yet) and I want help in a system that will let the player build his own "hideouts?" in some spots in the map when it gets dark outside. Any ideas on how I could do this or any tip on how to make a survival game were the player should scavenge for his own survival would be very helpful!! :D

Will it just be "survive as long as you can" or will there be a way to beat the zombies or get to a safe place permanently?  Hm, maybe as the game goes along you discover more and more weaknesses of the zombies so the focus gradually changes from spending all your time scavenging survival supplies to collecting materials for an effective weapon or cure?

@xoferew

Yeah I thought something like that too! Would be a great to search for something that will turn the game in your favor and actually "win" the game. But I still can't get the whole "player bulding his own hideout" system to work. To be honest it would be neat to have your own hideout and store your supplies in there... That's how the idea of the whole game popped in my mind actually :P

If it was a little cave you discovered, you would just have to block/disguise the entrance.  Or if it's a post-apocalyptic type world there should be many abandoned buildings.  Couldn't you board up the windows and barricade the doors?  If you build a hideout from scratch, what could you build it out of that the zombie wouldn't just smash?

Yeah do something other then zombies please... I know my opinion doesn't count for much but I for one are sick of them. Maybe make it about an alien invasion instead of a zombie outbreak? Or demons? Or some other kind of monster maybe? I donno. Just please, no more zombies. I am begging ya here!

It seems like you would need some scripts to do it right... I am not sure of the exact mechanics you have in mind, if any. It seems like as you describe it, a lot of the game would take place on a overworld map where you can go to locations and build them into hideouts, or scavenge there, or do some other mission. I have seen a few games like that but I don't know how deep you want to survival or base building or whatever.

I got it!  They are big aliens, or some of them are big, and when you kill one you can hole up INSIDE it!  You are safe there for a little while because the alien scent overwhelms your human scent.  After 12 hours it begins to horribly liquify and you have to leave.

There are storage scripts out there, so scavenging and collecting supplies would be totally possible.

As for building hideout - that's a nice feature ~ if 'building' would be just boarding windows and such (with a limited durability) then I guess it would be possible just via events.

I like these types of games, you know sand-box/survival etc. so it sounds great for me. I don't have anything against zombies, since I love simple survival game, but making something different could be totally great!

You don't even need storage scripts for the supplies. Variables will achieve the same thing. I made a simple crafting system with variables and Common Events. I like the idea of demons as opposed to zombies I also like the idea of being able to make a dead enemy into you're hideout. That would be an interesting twist. Since it's a survival game, you may want add a hunger system. The player would have to go on supply runs, trying to avoid a horde of zombie demon vampire aliens or whatever you use. There is a script to make a hunger system somewhere on here. Also are the hideouts going to be permanent when built or will the player have to occasionally do repair work?

Also if it's cold out the dead monster may have some residual body heat that keeps you from freezing to death.  Maybe it just gets cold at night or something.  (When my bro was little he had an Empire Strikes Back toy tauntaun with a hole in its stomach and sliced rubber flappy skin over the hole, so you could stuff Luke inside.)

Thank you all for the ideas and yes @KilloZapit I didn't want anything with zombies ( not that I have anything against them) I just possed them as an idea cause it was the first thing that popped into my mind when I was writting the post. Any script help with the hunger-freezing stuff and scavenging would be very helpful...Cause I don't know where to search :P . Anyway thanks for the help again :D :D

You might be falling to a different category than survival. You can't really win in survival. Only "survive" as long as possible until you meet you ultimate end.

What you might be thinking is resources management and even story driven if you want winning to be possible.

If survival is what you are thinking, you are going to need continuously spawning supplies to savage or else it won't be much of a survival.

@lonequeso yes, thanks I'll check those two out when I start creating the game :D

@Adventurer_inc. well I don't have it figured it out in my mind yet.. I have a rough idea of what will happen and what I'll add in the future..there might be an end, a winning end, a mystery end,or nothing...we'll see :D but I like the:

might use it somewhere ;)

If you're not using MP for anything else you can use that as your hunger. Easy to event and all.

I don't understand how the storage would work, personally,

but bases should be easy enough. Though, if your making storage areas, I dont recommend alot of bases sinc eyour supplies will end up all over the place.

Maybe using your own home as a base will suffice. Boarding walls, having to go out during the day and scavage food from other homes nearby, raid stores.

Even by doing some choice events/tasks you can make allies who can help scavage with you?

Do you intend for combat - a way to battle these "zombies" or just simply, run and hide?

I like the "save at day, hunted at night" idea and having stuff like window boards having durability.

At night, the durability goes down due to attacks on your base/home.

You could make it something like maybe, you hear on the news one day that a vaccine for the infected is almost complete, and you have to survive until that vacinne is created and then go and try obtain that vaccine to atleast save your friends/family, if you havent killed them already (they attacked you maybe, or were killed by someone else)?

Your game idea has alot of potential though. I like these sort of games :)

@Shi-an I try to figure things with events all the time but events end up being a buzz in the head so why not script it? :P

@Takeo212 Yes, the game completely resides on the "hunter by day, pray by night" (which is followed by many survival games Hint: see "Dying Light") and yes I think I'll want some sort of a combat between the player and whatever the hell I put there and I'm trying to figure out how they will battle... I also thought that the game will be completely choice based (It's gonna be difficult I know, but who said that I don't like difficult things? :P ) meaning that your choices will affect your friends, familly, the state of the village-city-region dunno, and I will add "crisis" choices that will impact a big portion of the game!! ;)
