Hey guys.

I've been doodling lately, so I decided I'd post here and see if I can get any feedback or constrictive critique from you guys.

Here are some of my recent doodles, mostly game related stuff for the now:

Pretty!  What did you use to make them?  Wish I could do highlights and shading like that.

Me too, xoferew. Me too.

Okay a couple things.

The small pic of Leina. Her tunic looks too rigid. It doesn't form to her body. See how in the big one, you made the front droop down a bit? Do the same with the lil pic. Also, it looks like the front is sticking out too far forward. Foreshorten it a bit.

Marina- It's a little hard to tell without the face being colored, but the left eye looks a bit too big.

Faoena- He looks really good so far. He waist seems tiny, but with the foreshortening it's hard to tell exactly. Of course, if hes supposed to have a skinny waist, you're all good  :)

Overall, they look good. The big pic of Leina is perfect. She's perfectly in proportion and her clothing looks like it's forming around her body. I really love the shading on it. Marina look perfectly proportioned, too. Keep honing your skill. You're doing great.

Thanks guys :D I appreciate feedback~

@xuferew: I used Paint Tool Sai and a bamboo tablet I stole from a friend ;) Well he gave me it a loan of way back and then he stopped drawing, so yep.

@lonequeso: Thanks :D

The first Leina image was a quick doodle to practice her hair and stuff. I didn't even realize how small it was until I saved it xD

The second one was my most recent drawing, and a placeholder image in my game until my friend finishes her final portrait :)

Marina was a doodle practice that I gave up on due to how long it was taking xD

I agree though, her eye is weirdly big/squint. I mostly just enjoyed her tunic :P

As for Faeona, she was a pain to draw. That pose was a nuisance lol.

Looking at her now though, I realise how manly she looks. I blame the armour.

I enjoyed the hair, that was it xD

Overall, I'll probably try practice drawing armour more.

I have fullbodies for these 3 that look tidy/neat so I don't fail entirely. Only poses xD

Thanks for the comments guys :D

First of all - these are great! That's totally good work! *Leina is cute =3*

Leina: There's a small weird behavior of tunic near her neck, it looks like layering issue (or maybe it's just me =P); but both look great, she is absolutely cute. =3 I wish I could draw 'humans' properly... Maybe someday... =3

Marina: It's not fully colored, so it's harder to tell. Maybe it's just me, but I think her legs and *rear bumper* are kinda too *big* =P comparing to rest of the body. ~ And I agree with lonequeso - her right eye is a little bit too big. The rest is great. =3

Faeona: Great! She looks like a game character. This is just beautiful. The only thing that caught my attention is her left foot. It looks kinda 'broken' =P. In the reference she has her foot like - (I mean angle) with a little \ (heel a little bit above ground) - in your picture it's / (I mean angle =P) which makes it look a little weird, but in general it's great, I really liked it... =3 It also reminds me of something, but I have no idea what... =P

Are these characters based on something or it's your original creation? =P

I must say you're doing absolutely great, you characters are cute - waiting to see more. =P

Lol. Yeah, I totally though Faeona was a dude

You could always make that work to you're advantage. All the other characters think that, too. Eventually they learn she's not.

You could have a lot of fun with that :)

Haha, thanks guys :3

These characters are 3/5 of my game characters for Tales of Eadris.

Faeona is actually a fairly important person in my game, and is definetely female xD She is fairly tomboyish though, so it's understandable ;)

Maybe I'll draw her in her other, more girly, outfit later just for that clarification xD (and the fact her name is Fiona/Faeona~)

Marina has a few things wrong with her posing, but it was a quickie I done as a preview for her design to a friend who harasses me for game progression~

She posture is supposed to be slim, but yea, I made her rump a little to big xD that was my fault since i suck at drawing skinny legs

Hey Takeo~~ Looking good! Really good :3 I'll mention some stuff that people haven't already talked about (I think hehe):

Leina:

  • Love the shading on the little portrait!
  • Her left eye (our right) has a somewhat thicker eyelid/line mark than it should be; it throws the perspective just a tad off. It's a really minor thing though! c:
  • Big portrait (is she not wearing any clothes?  ): her chest is thrown out a little too far (looking at the lines that would be underneath her cloak). Unless she's holding a really stressful position, her torso should be shifted back a tad and her right shoulder (our left) could maybe recede a tiny bit too, while her collarbone could move a bit further left ^^

Marina:

  • Action poses are hard! I applaud you for even doing one ^-^
  • Unless her ears are floppy (or unless those aren't ears), from this perspective her left ear (our right) shouldn't be angled so far out. Either that or her right ear (our left) is pressed too flat to her head.
  • If you look at the plane of her shoulders that you set, her chest/torso should also angle itself relatively closely to that plane :) Otherwise, from a frontal view she would have a really long armpit on one side XD
  • Her armband can follow the contour of her arm a little bit more, keep in mind that upper arms are usually closer to cylinders than we think when we're drawing 2D black-and-white linearts c:
  • I'm not entirely sure what's going on with her pants since it's pitch black color on my screen, but hopefully you know what you're doing! ^^

Faeona:

  • It looks like she's turning, so I would give the ends of her hair a little tighter curl~ it gives a nice action feel, especially if you make her hair more separated into more strands/chunks.
  • From this perspective, her right shoulder (our left) is a little longer than it ought to be. I would probably curve her entire shoulder in a little more.
  • From this perspective, her right arm (our left) should also be shorter. Since she's reaching halfway around her body, her upper arm could use a little more foreshortening (otherwise she has a super long right arm!) and her armpit could be shifted up a bit too. c:
  • I think her right foot could also be pointed a little further up-- in the case of a turn especially, her foot should either be pointed closer towards her other foot or at least in line with the direction of her knee :)
  • Her waist and lower torso are also both really long ^-^ Maybe tweak it a little bit, but that's mostly a preference thing. ^^

Really well done on all of them! \o/ You did a great job <33

Yay! Thanks Tsarmina :)

Leina

The naked Leina portrait was me being lazy!

She wears a green ligth plated armour under her cloak, but I ended up getting annoyed at her armour, so left it.

She's a placeholder in my game for now, so don't worry - she won't be naked in the end? xD

Marina

It's mostly evident, but she's a cat-human so her ears are cat-like instead of human. That's why they stick out like that.

I think I spent a good amount of hours trying to get that pose and gave up and cried once I got some colouring done Dx

Though, her pants are actually dark blue (I always seem to have an issue with contrast - does anyone else else see black pants? or are they blue?)

Faeona

I struggled with that posing actually. My posing has always been lazy - draw a character waist up, doing nothing. Thats what I normally do... *shame*

You are right though, it'll be taking notes for next time I try dynamic posing so I can make them better :D

I feel better drawing girls (curves and stuff), so I am dreading drawing the guys next... Atleast I won't mess up there curves xD

Thanks for the feedback :D I've taking a note of all so far and will use as reference for future doodles/practices.

Oh~ That's not what I meant ^^ I understand the cat-style ears, I just mean the way they're tilted :)

Oooh... I misread!

Yea, I actually haven't drawn alot of cat-like styles, so the ears became... elf-like more than cat-like >///<

You could always make her half cat, half, elf, half human  :)

I'm glad Tsarmina weighed in on this. I have an okay eye for art, but I'm far from an expert. She's one of the best people in this community to get feedback from.

I'm curious. Have you made turnarounds of the characters? As in Front pose, back pose, left and right profile? Getting their look down from straight on poses will go a long way in helping you figure out the perspective with the tougher action poses.

Aw thanks  @Takeo, I agree that making turnarounds is a super way to fill out all your character details! I admit I'm pretty terrible at this myself because I'm super lazy, but especially for characters that you'll see over and over, you're going to want to know how their features, limbs, and clothing details will be placed from various angles :) I suggest rather quick sketches because detailed ones probably aren't necessary. Also if you want to do some fullbody sketches, those are really good practice because they force you to make a (at least somewhat balanced) pose since you can see parts of the body positioned relatively to other parts.~

Ha, I have fullbody refernces for front and back so far since I had to send them to a friend to do my in-game busts.

All other minor ideas are in my head, since I don't really need them in game. Afterall, it's hard to make out every detail in RPGM, so most details aren't needed.

Main weapons are an example of that. Since throughout the game you get new weapons (typical rpg style), so yea.

I still have the guys to draw up though, and I suck more at guys than I do at females.

I will eventually add doodles of them too though for practice/feedback.

As for marina, she has to remain half-cat xD Leina is the elf.

If I can draw one, there will also be a dwarf on the team but thats a WIP atm.

I think they look great so far! I really like your artwork. I think you're a great artist. :) I also like how you're open to opinions. :) And seem quite modest.

I'm not exactly sure how much i say will have been said already, but here's what i can give you. Please forgive me if i'm too blunt.

DOeqmoy.jpg

I like to draw over work because i think it's easier to see what is being said. For your first picture, i think we could reduce the size of her upper torso and shoulders a bit. Then i think we could shift the legs a bit, i think in particular, maybe shifting the viewpoint they are drawn at. This is because we have her lower arms and hips at a (seemingly) levelled/ eye-level view-- meaning, it appears we are looking at these parts head-on. Now, imagine her legs connected to her hips in 3D-- or, if someone were to place a Barbie Doll directly in front of you: Imagine how you would perceive her legs, and how the knees and legs would match up. You would want them to be on the same plane, or viewpoint (eye-level) as the hips they are attached to. You may also have the planes to go towards a vanishing point.

Artist-Creates-Barbie-Doll-With-a--Reali

E5nrdTm.jpg

This picture is great, there is not much critique i would have here. :) Imo, maybe just changing the angle of her bust, and making her legs + hips a bit smaller.

Similar to what i mentioned with the 1st picture, we can try to keep the viewpoint of bust and her shoulders the same. We want to picture a 3D object, and how the parts of the object would connect directly, and how we would perceive them: We can take a look at the Barbie doll again. If we were to set that doll at an angle away from us, for example, how would we perceive that bust relative to say, her shoulders, or her waist?

This is an example of an upper torso/ bust at an angle. But notice that the viewpoint, or plane, of the components, are all aligned/ angled the same. In other words, her bust is at an angle, yes, but is on the same plane as her ribcage. Her ribcage is at an angle, yes, but is on the same plane as her collarbone. Etc. Because these 3D objects occupy the same space.

8949-1_asl.jpg?

H2kWeZE.jpg

This one is also very good imo. The eye part I changed, you can ignore imo, it's just a small thing again related to planes. :) But it's pretty much fine either way imo.

Her torso, i think we could move it over to the right slightly-- we want to try to keep the neck at a nicely centered position through the body. We could then curve the left side of her torso inwards slightly; this is because her body appears to be at a 3/4-angle. We need to therefore perceive her torso, a 3D object, at this 3/4 angle: For example, if a woman's hips curve inwards at a frontal view, and she is halfway between a frontal view and side-view, then her hips should still curve in, at least maybe for half this amount. :)  Again, we'd like to draw the shape for what it would appear like in 3D.

A woman's torso should curve inwards slightly no matter the angle though. :)

Sorry if this got rambly, but i hope it helps. I also have a male anatomy thread-like guide that I just updated for you that might be informative. It's the bright green link in my signature. :)

Oh, wow. Thank you Bugs! :D

I really appreciate all that feedback, and personally, I love when someone draws over the image to show mistakes (I think it's called redlining?)

It really helps understand exactly what you mean, and all that feedback - i totally agree.

I can definetely take that into consideration for future drawings. I want as much feedback as possible to when I do draw stuff officially for my game, it should has as little mistakes/error as possible :)

I'm always open to constructive critique - is everyone, not just drawing ;) How do we improve otherwise?

But yea, I really appreciate that Bugs! I'll be refering to this next time I open SAI :D

The Leina drawing was entirely, I don't know. I think I just got crazy with the curves and she got really... forward xD

My main appreciation is the Faeona/blond one. I really had trouble with that one, so I really am thankful for the line-over :D

Thanks guys!

Also, I got bored last night and done a misc doodle.

It's a different style and I'm not seeking feedback on it, but still feel free to leave some if you see anything wrong :D I dont normally draw like this style.

ps, it's supposed to be a "windy effect", but yea... xD

I think the hair needs work.

I really like the girl in the green hoody as it is. It was quite clear to me you were going for a windy effect, it looks stellar, Good job.

The "windy effect" is well done - the whole drawing looks great & cute. =3

I like the simplicity here - IDK why, but I like when something looks good with only few colors. (maybe, because it looks neat and clear? =P)

If I had to leave some critique - then that would be the proportions of her head ~ I think she would look kinda weird if there wasn't that "windy effect" (no hair covering her face). - but that's just assuming.

~ In that drawing (pose and conditions) she looks really good for me. Great work! =3

You definitely are good at this ~ I hope to see more of your cute art! =3

Another quickie :D

Literally drawn within the time I posted the last one,

I intend to use this in my short game, so I'm trying to be simplistic.

I get bored and give up if the image requires to much effort to be honest...

Thanks Riki :D

Make something like this in such a short period of time? That's beyond my skills! ^^

I see you got the basics that allow you to draw stuff pretty quickly ~ Nice!

It's cute and well made =3

I intend to use this in my short game

Make other graphics with similar style and that would be unique! =3

Good luck! (=

So cute!  especially the first one, love the strong lines.  The second one I feel like her lower half is a lot smaller proportion that her top half, especially her feet are tiny.  I like both halves of it though!
