OneManArmy 1 Posted September 26, 2015 I am just a beginner in parallaxing and I am trying to make my first full game. The game is inspired by slavic mythology and it will be called Howling Hounds. This is one of the starting locations - Witch Hut, (Baba Yaga's hut - that's why the house is on chicken legs) if you would like to give me your feedback about this map I would be very happy http://postimg.org/image/d4d7vqh37/

Rikifive 3,411 Posted September 26, 2015 1st post and got blued already? I'm impressed! ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Just kidding! (= This map looks absolutely good for me ~ I liked the power of colors ~ this map is 'alive' (= I only disliked shadows - In trees the shadows are cut off. [squares everywhere =O] Hut's shadow is inaccurate - the light is coming from upper left corner - how is this possible that the shadow of the ladder is going from behind the ladder? =3 The thingie with scarecrow doesn't have shadow at all. =P and in general, the shadows aren't fully accurate. So, besides these shadows, that map looks great for me. =
xoferew 261 Posted September 26, 2015 Yes, I agree with Riki. The house is really cool but because the shadow is not under it, it looks like it is sitting on the ground as well as up on chicken feet. Can you put the shadow under it the way the trees have shadows under them?

OneManArmy 1 Posted September 27, 2015 Ok I will post 3 images now sorry for my insubordination in those terms I'll hope now everything will be ok. I tried to fix those shadows but i see that it is not my strongest asset Witch Forest http://postimg.org/image/tii5jyltd/ Witch Hut lvl1 http://postimg.org/image/vyjyxt3w1/ Forest http://postimg.org/image/huo3pewoh/ Thank you all for feedback it always helping
xoferew 261 Posted September 27, 2015 In your forest map I really like the depth of your river and your cliffs. The river is awesomely 3D. The bridge looks a little scary. Does it just have a railing on one side? Shadows are definitely... better...
OneManArmy 1 Posted September 27, 2015 (edited) Ehh no I have it on overlay that run as event so I didn't show it on a map. I will work more on my shadows sometimes it is easier to imagine them but usually too hard for my brain If anyone have any idea how to improve maps even at first sight little crazy just share it with me it might help me anyway Edited September 27, 2015 by OneManArmy
Rikifive 3,411 Posted September 27, 2015 (edited) Agree with xofi. (= The shadows... are weird now - the previous one was good, but just kinda misplaced. And still, trees have these shadows cut off. It looks kinda weird. =P Edited September 27, 2015 by Rikifive
Izu. 239 Posted September 28, 2015 (edited) Those screenshots look great! I especially like the large forest one, spacious but yet, full of neat little things. Adding some wildlife in there would add a lot to it. Since this is parallaxing, don't be afraid to get a little more in depth with the pretty effects and lighting. I would say add in some varying degrees of green in the grass, and trees. Dark patches, light patches. Try to avoid having dirt paths being quite so straight, add some splits where the grass has over taken the road. Also, with the grass there seems to be some sort of problem around the corners and such, and grass not there when there probably should be some there. You can marquee out a patch of that overgrown grass and just throw it into the missing spots and it should be fine. Other than that there's not much to critique that hasn't already been said. Shadows, I generally don't do much of, as I myself am no expert on the way light behaves. So, I think it's best to assume and go with what you think is right. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now for the neat little effects and all that. With maps that are outside there's one thing to keep in mind. Don't go crazy overboard with it, as nature tends to not have 20 light streaks going in every which way from, say, the moon. I tend to always make two versions of a map. One during the day and one at night. For the water, water is always something you can play around with, giving off reflections of say the bridge or having the ripples of the water glinting from the sun. Just play around with different things and get something that you like. At night, you could also add the reflection of the moon. Here's some quick examples: Day Night --------------- Day Night Edited September 28, 2015 by Izu.
OneManArmy 1 Posted October 1, 2015 Thank you all for help especially Izu your comments were very constructive. However I do not have idea how to make lighting effect and those water glitches on river... Another thing is that I will probably wait for RPGMaker MV which I have already pre-purchased but I wonder if parallaxes will be working in the same way like in VX Ace. And I would probably spend this time on learning javascript and html and css which about I have no idea A lot of work before me... Thank you all again
Dymdez 77 Posted October 1, 2015 OneManArmy -- all of these effects are simple once the trick has been pointed out to you. For you now, just remember, keep your layers separate so you don't get that weird "grass gap" because with separated ground layers, its easy to fill it in and make it look natural (feel free to PM me for any help). No need to put it off for something else, it only takes minutes to learn^^ you could easily do it all, after all, you're a one man army, remember? As for the moon/water stuff, although there are many ways of doing it, the easiest it just adding a tint and a different "show picture" or however you wish to do it (obviously based on whatever script you're using). Izu's recommendation is quite good -- it looks brilliant.
OneManArmy 1 Posted October 6, 2015 (edited) I can't wait till release RPG maker MV... I just wonder how tiles will work (old nice one) because the new one is almost identical like from vx ace ;/ I am trying to paint some grass I am little bit skeptical in terms of my skills in pixel painting but that what I have accomplished so far. Can you guys give me feedback in regards of this basic grass tile for rpg maker mv? Edited October 6, 2015 by OneManArmy
