xoferew 261 Posted October 3, 2015 I'm looking for a happy medium between flat land and cliffs. I would have thought hills would be easy to draw but nnnnno. I'm not sure about the colors, the shading, the softness/pixelliness, shape... Advice welcome. The ones on the top are the same as the ones on the bottom only there is a flower autotile underneath. I should clarify, these are semi-transparent events.
magic2345 252 Posted October 3, 2015 Oooohh rolling hills eh? Hmm, since it's top-down....I'm not sure if the shadow should be that large. It looks like a hill/mound but the shadow makes it look taller than that. On the other hand, without those shadows, it seems...flat. I'm sorry I can't give you any advice xoferew, I am also confused. Perhaps decrease the shadows on the north part a bit and increase the soft highlights area?
xoferew 261 Posted October 3, 2015 (edited) Yes, I think you're right. There's too much dark outline. Maybe this is a little better? Edited October 3, 2015 by xoferew
Cymiril 80 Posted October 3, 2015 Wow, that's a lot better. The purple dot shading on the first one clashed a bit too much, the second looks really improved. Good work!
xoferew 261 Posted October 3, 2015 Thanks! The purple dots weren't shading so much as an attempt to see if the flower autotiles and the hill event would play nicely together (they didn't). Also an attempt to see if the flower autotiles would hide the weirdness of the hill (they didn't). But some progress has definitely been made. I think I've spent enough hours poking at it today, I can't tell if I'm making it better or worse now. I feel like it's too pale, but if it's not then it won't stand out as a hill. Hmm. Tsarmina 2,612 Posted October 3, 2015 I think you actually did a great job with them! Hills have been plaguing me too, it's just a really unfortunate point of view to try and make hills. Kudos for making a successful one!
Rikifive 3,411 Posted October 4, 2015 This looks awesome! That's nice to see not-completely-flat world ~ great work!
EpicFILE 200 Posted October 4, 2015 That's a wonderful effect! =O The hills gives more natural feeling to the environment. I like the blue haired guy as usual. He's the coolest.
xoferew 261 Posted October 4, 2015 (edited) Thank you all! Today I am working on sand dunes. Too bad these hills are all flat when you walk on them, but the illusion can be real if we all believe in it! Right?! edited to add dunes in progress. RetroExcellent 369 Posted October 4, 2015 That right there is some pretty snad, My only suggestion would be to make more so there is some variety, otherwise it looks believable!
xoferew 261 Posted October 4, 2015 Thanks! I want to make a bigger one, but for now I have made some plants to give more variety.

xoferew 261 Posted October 4, 2015 Thanks Riki! I think I'll move the dunes and dune grass to the resource sharing page unless anyone notices any glaring flaws.
