Choose Your Own Someone Else's Adventure!

I thought up a new game to try out! Remember the books I'm referencing? Where you read the first page, and it gave you choices to turn to different pages for different outcomes? This is similar. I'm going to start things of in a kind of mundane manner, to give it a neutral beginning. Then the next poster chooses one of the options I gave, takes over the story for a bit, describing what happens for that choice, and leaves it at another set of choices for the next poster, and so on. Feel free to get the character in to any good/bad/dangerous/awkward/weird situation you can think of, but unlike the "Choose Your Own Adventure" books, no dead ends.

Just a few rules to point out:

- Don't kill off the player character

- The narrator speaks in italics

-  (Put Out of Character comments in parenthesis)

And, that's it, anything else goes! Let's get started!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A lone warrior trudges slowly along the road, descending out of the mountain pass, exhausted from his travels.  Just as he considers stopping to make camp for the night, he scans the horizon, and notices a small village off in the distance. He smiles to himself, seeing dim light glowing out of a few windows, promising the warmth of a fire burning in the hearth. As he draws closer, he can make out that the two buildings alight are the inn and pub. Making his way up to the gate, the lone guard calls out to him.

“Hail, and well met, traveler!  What brings you to our gates so late this night?â€

Looking up at the guard, you lower the hood of your cloak, and reply, “Well met to you as well, my friend.  I am but a weary traveler, looking for a warm meal and a warm bed. Will you permit me to enter?â€

The guard nods, turning the winch to raise the portcullis. As you enter, the guard stops you, saying, “I won’t have no trouble out of you while you’re here, right?â€

You look at the guard for a moment, and slowly shake your head. Satisfied, the guard returns to his post, and releases the winch holding the gate. The portcullis slams in to place behind you as you quickly scan the town, finding the pub and the inn.

Do you…

The lone warrior chose to take a proper rest. So he went to the inn.

What's surprising for him, the innkeeper allowed him to stay freely.

"Thanks, you're so kind." "Just go and take a rest."

The next morning, the lone warrior packed his bag and prepare to go around the town.

When he opened the door, a suspicious man showed up in front of his face.

"Give me your money, or I'll take your life."

--Give him money--

He promised the town guard that he wouldn't cause any trouble, although his first instinct was to beat this strange man to a pulp. But if he broke his promise now it would surely damage his reputation. The adventurer sighed and drudged his hands through his pockets, the rattling sound of change echoing the room. This was the last of his money and he was about to hand it all off to this brute.

"There. It's all I have. Surely it's enough for even you, right," the adventurer questioned the ruffian

The ruffian quickly scans the pocket change. "Two cents? What the hell am I gonna afford with two cents? You're pathetic." And proceeded to walk off.

Now the adventurer had a motive. Would he either plan to exact revenge on the ruffian that stole his two cents, or should he just walk it off, and pretend like nothing happened?

Sure he's very angry because the man take his last pieces of money.

But he tried to forget it and went straight into the pub, hoping he'll gain an information to get a high-paid job.

Once he entered the pub, he saw a big board with two bulletins.

"Monster hunting jobs? Which one will I take?"

--Flying Raptor: Dangerous, high prize--

Our hero stares at the board for some time, his eyes shifting back and forth between the two bounties. Suddenly, he snatches the parchment with a drawing of a huge, vicious looking bird with a huge maw and razor sharp teeth on it. This beast had apparently been snacking on local farm animals, so the sooner it was gone, the less the town's food supply would be impacted. Everyone in the village had chipped in on the bounty, for the reward was quite substantial.

"Now, this one looks interesting...", the warrior whispered to himself. He walked up to the bar and leaned against the counter, bounty in hand.

The barman, not looking up from wiping a glass that was surely dry by now, asked, "What'll it be?"

"At the moment, my good man, I have not a copper to my name. But I am hoping to change that. What can you tell me of this beast?" the warrior asks.

Finally looking up and noticing the man in front of him, the bartender briefly shows his surprise, taking in the young man's size and equipment. His face quickly molds into a frown, and he says "Son, I don't want ya to think I'm doubting you, since it's clear you've seen your fair share of battle, but I know for a fact that the Mayor intended that beast be felled by a group of warriors, not just one man. Do ya have others with you?"

Our hero thinks for a moment, and shakes his head. "Nope, just me. But I've fought bigger birds than this."

The bartender looks at the warrior suspiciously. "Well, lad, don't say I didn't warn ya. I still think you ought not fight it alone, and if ya don't have any one to help, you could still ask around town. The blacksmith is quite skilled with a blade, and the fletcher's daughter is quite the shot with a bow. Just something for you to think on."

The warrior nods, and walks out of the pub in to the sunlight.

--Recruit the blacksmith and the fletcher's daughter--

The blacksmith's house was on the western edge of the town, while the fletcher's house was on the middle north.

The lone warrior walked a little to the west, and he found a house with a big sign.

It says "Loree The Blacksmith".

When he entered the house, he saw a sweaty young man forging a spear.

"Excuse me, are you Mr.Loree?" says the lone warrior.

"No, I am one of his workers. Mr.Loree is away at the moment."

Being a very pro-active warrior, he decides it will be more efficient to get the fletcher's daughter and come back later. She lives

on the outskirts of town. The house sits by itself at the end of a dirt road. There's a small farming patch. Knowing nothing about farming you have no idea what they're growing. As you approach the front porch, you see a man in a wooden rocking chair.

He has a crossbow resting across his lap. As you approach, he points it at you.

"What business do you have here, outsider?"

"If you want to propose my daughter, I'd tell you to leave now, or I'll make you leave this world."

The lone warrior surprised. But it didn't make him afraid to tell what he wanted to do.

He took a deep breath and he speak politely.

"Sir, I'm not going to propose your daughter. I'm here to seek your daughter's help."

Then the old man sees him more closely....

"Oh, sorry... I thought you were that immoral prince. Here, take a seat." Says the old man who seems relieved now.

"The immoral prince?"

Just recruit the daughter and move on.

The warrior senses if he asks about the immoral prince, the fletcher's daughter will talk for an hour straight. He ain't got time for that.  ^_^

"Is your daughter home right now?" the warrior asks.

The farmer responds, " Of Course. Myra! Myra! You have a visitor!"

Myra comes outside a couple minutes later. The warrior introduces himself and tells her about the giant birds.

She looks disinterested. "What's in it for me?" she asks?

Do you:

Tell her about the reward in the hope that it will entice her?

--Give a long speech about the danger of letting the giant bird population go unchecked--

The lone warrior tried to find a way to persuade her...

By seeing through her eyes, the warrior can tell she didn't interested in big reward.

So he told her the danger of the giant bird instead, followed by an hour long speech.

"Father, let me help this man." says Myra with full determination.

After she said that, silence filled the room.

But slowly her father opened his mouth.

"I think the giant bird needs to be stopped.... Myra, take care of yourself."

Myra picked up her massive long bow and followed the lone warrior who opened the door.

Go straight the the giant bird's lair.

Myra doesn't seem like she even wants any reward. If it's just the two of them, he may be able to claim all the gold for himself. The two head to the giant bird's lair. It isn't easy to get to. Reaching it will require climbing a fairly large mountain. The nest should be somewhere near the middle. It is dusk when the reach the base, and it looks like a storm is brewing.

Do they:

Set up camp for the night.

OR

Begin climbing the mountain.

Set up camp for the night.

The two finds a secluded location between an old tree and a big rock. The rock is cresent shaped with an outer slanted side and the inner meeting the ground at a sharp angle, this forms a near ideal shelter from the wind.

The trees trunk is wide and positioned close to the rock side, mosses covers the base and its branches reaches far, most of them are pale and with no leaves. They set up their tent

close to the rockside using the tree as an anchor point. The sun is drawing near the horizon and winds are picking up.

Cook some food.

It is steadily getting colder outside. It looks like it's going to be a chilly night. They decide to build a fire both for cooking and to provide them warmth. Luckily, there's plenty of twigs and branches scattered about. Building the fire won't be too difficult. It happens to be one of the warrior's talents. They get a decent blaze going. It's time to cook some food. At that moment, the warrior realizes that in his haste to battle the giant bird, he forgot to bring any food. Luckily he is now with a skilled archer so hunting for food is still an option.

Though he could ask Myra to hunt for some food, he chose not to did that.

Not only because it was cold, but because he didn't know what kind of danger lurks in the night.

The lone warrior walked around, and he found some berries.

When he tried to pick them up, suddenly a bear appeared from the bushes.

But it didn't attack him.

Recruit the bear.

The warrior calmly walks up to the bear. It eyes him curiously. Maybe it's deciding if the warrior is a threat. Maybe it's wondering how he tastes. Who knows? It's a bear.

"Hey there, Mr. Bear. I bet you like eating birds, dontcha? We're hunting one. If you help us kill it, you can have it all to yourself. How 'bout it?"

The bear blankly stares back. It cocks it head to the side indicating it is trying to understand this strange creature before it. The bear gets bored and walks away. What did you think was going to happen? Bears can't talk! The warrior is getting really hungry now.

He thinks to himself, "That bear would make quite a feast. That fur would keep us warm, too."

Do you:

Try and hunt the bear?

Continue to look for edible berries and plants?

--Hunt the bear!--

The adventurer grabs a stick from the ground, and, using a sharp rock to trim it, he turns the stick into a makeshift spear. He sneaks up behind the bear, ready to lunge, but before he can stab the bear, another one bursts from the bushes, tackling the adventurer to the ground and letting out a loud rawr.

"Screw this noise!" the warrior thinks to himself as he rolls out of harms way.

He quickly dashes away though the bushes. The bear chases him for a short while. It either loses stamina or interest, not that it matters to the warrior, and the bear walks away. The warrior tries to get his bearings. Luckily, he didn't run too far away from the camp. He then notices something and begins to smile. He ran by a berry bush!

"What luck!" he can't help but exclaim.

It is too dark to tell exactly what kind of berries the are. It isn't his area of expertise either. He just hopes they are edible. There seem to be two types of berries in the area. He can just barely make out their color from the starlight. One bush has black berries. The other red.

Do you:

Try the black berries first?

The adventurer plucks a red berry from the bush and plops it into his mouth. To his luck, they taste like fresh, but a little sour, raspberries. He hauls out his trusty knapsack, collecting what red berries he can from the bush, placing them all in his bag. However, the black berries still remain.

Thinking about the black berries, the adventurer plucked one black berry from the bush and ate it. As he ate the berry, he feels healthier than before. He took out his knapsack and took the black berries and went back to camp.

"I've got some berries!" The adventurer said.

Myra stopped preparing her bow and looked at the adventurer, feeling hungry, the adventurer gave her berries and she ate some. After a while, she asks why the adventurer took a journey.

"Well, here's my story..."

"GRRROOOOOOOWL!!"

When the warrior thought he's already in a safe place, the bear showed up again, in front of his eyes.

Myra took her weapon, ready to shoot the bear down.

But something's weird happened.

Its fur grew shorter, and its body grew smaller.

The bear transformed into a man!

Trembled, his face was filled with fear.

He wanted to say something.

"It's okay... It's okay... Tell me, what was happened to you?" says the warrior as he slowly approached the man.

"P...Please... Please, help me... The witch... She took my farm with her giant birds, and she cursed me into a bear."

The warrior, and Myra, stared at him with disbelief.

But what they saw was real.

"This might be the last time I can transform back into human. Once the curse gain its full power, I'll become a bear... Forever."
