Wish to the Stars – Plot and stuff  – theory and development thread

Hello everyone! With MV coming up soon, I've wanted to come up with a medium length RPG sort of in the vein of the older Final Fantasy games. And I thought that I could do this as a small project to show the capabilities of MV.

Project Title: Wish to the Stars

Rating: T

Length: 6-8 hours

Battle system: Sideview

Plot Premise:

The player takes the role of two siblings, the older Aiden, and the younger Aria. The live in a small village where they work as the local monster hunters for the village, although, it’s mostly fighting pathetic slimes, and chasing away the occasional wolf packs. Aiden finds the work boring to say the least. One night, while watching the stars with his sister, he utters a wish to be able to go on an adventure.

The next morning the two awaken to the village under attack by a knight clad in black armor and a wizard dressed in sky blue robes. The two attempt to fight back, but are defeated and Aiden is taken.

Aria wakes up three days later and sets out to find her brother and to discover why the knight and the wizard took him. Aiden, meanwhile, awakens in a cage in the camp of his captors. He devises an escape with a fellow prisoner and the two go on the run from the knight. The player will switch between the two every time a new chapter begins.

Gameplay:

The game will focus on combat and exploration. The combat will be a classic turn based rpg system that focuses more on synergy with party members. The none combat part of gameplay will focus on exploring areas and unlocking secrets, as well as visiting towns and having dialogue with NPCs.

Hey there Squirrel, a good topic here.

I voted for disgraced knight, there's the most room for conflict, character growth, and interesting scenarios with it - I feel.

While I wouldn't want to judge it before I see the execution, my big problem with the story thus far is a very generic hero of a thousand faces setup. Hero is in a small village, hero is bored with life but he's good with the sword, the evil dark knight attacks, the dog is shot, the hero vows revenge, Luke blows up the Death Star. At this point, there isn't much indication of mixing that up or subverting it- which might make the game seem tired before it really starts.

Having two protagonists is something you have an edge with though, and it'd be really awesome to see them working off one another in either mandatory or more subtle ways. Defeat an optional boss in one area, no enemy reinforcements in another - kind of thing. I'm sure you could crank this up to 11 and have a really great outcome.

I'm going to add two more party members later today, the top four by the time I start working on the project will be the ones put into the game.

I am planning a few subversions, I won't spoil them here.

Yes, yes! You know my line of thought! I'm also planning a few other similar things as you suggested, but those are to be announced at a later time.

Solid idea so far. I voted fro the last survivor of an ancient race. I haven't played too many games with that type of character. Plenty with a dying race, but rarely the last one. FF13-2 had something like that with Noel, but he was a poorly developed, one dimensional character. Now I want to see someone do it right.  :)

I'd imagine this character would be a very unique class with equally unique skills that are in danger of becoming lost arts. You can do a lot of different things with it.

As far as input on the story and the main characters, I'll wait to see what else you come up with first. I never like critiquing or giving input so early in development.

Personally, I don't think there is such a thing as a bad idea when it comes to this. Whether or not it's successful is all in the execution.

That was the general idea with the character concept, one that would be incredibly unique in the party with an interesting story.

I think having a wizard and a knight along, specifically if the party was comprised of only those two, could lead to some interesting parallels

Since you've already got other characters in mind though I'd vote to see a genuinely engaging animal companion. Most are god awful. Red XIII was okay, but it relied on that interplay with his 'humanity'. So yeah, he was an interesting character but not so much an animal.

I'd go for wanderer. Since he's been wandering and has seen much, he can serve as an in-party expositor (Guy who explains everything, especially the geography and history) for the world you're building.

Just wanted to add FF7 to the list. Aerith is the last of the ancients!

I voted the same as you tho^^

Unfortunately, it looks like disgraced knight may take this. If only we had some sort of ninja who could assassinate the ones who voted for disgraced knight. Money is tight right now so we'd need one that accepts some other form of payment like candy or cookies or something. Too bad there's no one on the forum like that...

This poll is also running on another forum, and I will be adding up the combined votes from both threads, so the knight isn't a shoe in just yet.

Very interesting poll, LordSquirrel. I went with the animal companion. The first reason was because I have recently read a book called Feral, which gave me the thought process of what you might do. As for the second reason, many games, like Pokemon and Digimon, have had you raise pets/allies to help you go through challenges, but then Dragon Quest IX came out. One of the classes, which is a Ranger, allows you to let enemies free. So, my question is... What's your setup for the haracter class in question?

I hear you calling out. But I have to inform you that Cookie ninja's must not intervene in the democratic prosses.

Sorry i'd love to help but our laws demand this. <.< My hands are tied

Honestly, the classes are mostly just vague ideas at the moment. Theu kinda have to be until the poll is over, so I'm not having to completely redo a class because the characters chosen from the poll don't have a rogue among them, or a warrior, magical talent, ect...

  • A friendly wanderer
  • A disgraced knight
  • An animal companion
  • A mysterious wizard
  • A good childhood friend
  •  The last member of an ancient race
  • An exiled prince

Well guys, the votes are in and the poll is over. Time to see just who will be in the game.

First, the top four, which will be the party members in the game:

In 1st place we have… Cavall, the animal companion!

And right behind him in 2nd place is… Galahad, the disgraced knight!

Coming in at 3rd is… Marcus, the childhood friend!

And last, but not least, the 4th place winner is… Eden, the last of an ancient race!

Quite the interesting cast we have there. I hope I can do them justice! But now onto those who didn’t quite make it.

In 5th place is… Hillary, the wanderer!

Just behind her in 6th place is… Sebastion, the exiled prince!

And finally, the 7th place winner is… Phin, the mysterious wizard!

Thank you guys for taking enough interest in this to vote. We got a total of 54 votes between here and the MV forums! Thank you all again, and I hope to be posting some news on the project in a week, or two. Until then, have a good day!

Final vote counts(from most to least):

An animal companion - Cavall: 14

A disgraced knight - Galahad: 10

A childhood friend - Marcus: 10

The last member of an ancient race - Eden: 7

A friendly wanderer - Hillary: 5

An exiled prince - Sebastion: 4

A mysterious wizard - Phin: 2
