how to make 3 tall tree tile?

Recommended Posts

my friend wants a 3 tall tree with the leaves that go off into the tiles next to it so like 3 tall

how would i do this?

this is what he said he wants http://prntscr.com/8soygm

so do i just make my own new file with only the tree. or use a tileset \from the game and edit that to make it. (sorry if you dont understand what i mean)

and if its 3 tall how will the game know it all has to be 1 object and not 3 different ones?

You can just paste it into the tileset no matter how big it is, as long as there is room.

If you want to make it its own file, it's like a sprite:  paste 12 of the same image into a grid 3 across and four down.  Each frame of the grid can be as many pixels as you want, it doesn't have to be 32x32.  Only, each frame has to be the same size.  Put a $ on the beginning of its filename.  Then import it into "characters."  Paste it in with an event.

The tileset route might be better because you can go into tileset settings and make star passability on peripheral parts of the tree, so you can walk behind the parts of it that it makes sense to walk behind.  Event route is better if you want the leaves to flutter or a bird to fly around in it or something animated.

would it be good to make it so i have a 32x32 image for every part like have one 32x32 be part of the trunk then another be the leafs then just put them 1 by 1 in game to make it look like a tree

You CAN do that, or you can just make a character sheet of the tree you want. Character sets do not have to be 32x32, so long as all spaces are the same for each frame, much like xoferew mentioned above. With custom character sheets, you can make things as big or small as you wish.

so can i just make a blank sheet and use it as a tile sheet? as long as i make my images in the 32x23 square the game will let me use it?

so like make a sheet the same size as the normal tilesets then make 3 pictures on it for the tree and import it

Hmm. I don't think we're on the same page, here. Let's look at it this way:

IN MY OPINION the easiest way to do what you want to do is with an event. WHen you create a new event, it asks you which charset you want to use, right? Well, your tree needs to be a charset that you want to use. So, instead of 32x32, it sounds like you want an event picture that is 96 x 96. So, you're going to want to make a new picture in GIMP, Photoshop, whatever you use, that is 96 x 96, but you want the have four down and three across, like a normal charset, so the actual picture size should be 384 Tall x 288 wide. It might help, at this point, to enable a grid on your software that is 32x32 so you can get a good idea of what part of the tree will be where. Place the trunk in the square that is 3 tiles down, 2 over. Build up and out from there, and you'll have one tree. Then, you can either import it into the game (Save the filename as $BigTree or something, just make sure to include the $) or you can copy and paste that tree to all of the other slots and then import it. Copying it into the other slots will let you animate it.

Yes, what I often do is use an existing tileset and paste over something I don't need.  Like if I'm making a pine forest map that doesn't have snow, I can paste my pine trees over the snowy tiles and still have the rocks and flowers and whatever to use.

Edit:  But another benefit of doing it the event way is that you can make your map look more natural by having things offset, not "snapped to grid."  Paste two or three trees together in an overlapping clump, etc.

oh alright, and by doing it that way will i be able to have it so the player in the game can still walk around the tree? so like the very bottom trunk you cant walk though but then the part that has the leaves you can. just so it gives it the feel that the tree is up in the air and not like long on the ground.

I'm thinking that if you do it that way, the event square is not passable (unless you click "through") but the graphic above/around the square is passable.  You might need to paste some blank events above the square/whereever you don't want passabillity.

Don't add it as a player.  Make an event and in the graphics box for the event, click on your tree pic.

Okay, remember what I said about pasting in 12 of them, three across and four down?  The game is trying to take 1/12 of the image.  You should have a tree inside that rectangle.

but then the tree is to tall to fit in it

You can make your frames as big as you need to.  Measure your tree - how many pixels tall and wide is it?  That's how tall and wide your frame needs to be.  Then you need three frames across and four down.

You said you're using photoshop?  You probably just need to change the size of the whole image so that your tree fits in 1/12 of the space.  Like, if your tree is 10x30, your whole image would need to be 30x120.

If you share your tree graphic, I can turn it into a character sprite for you if you are having trouble with it :)

Just in general, I can accept either a PNG or a .PSD. You can attach it on your reply, or use an image hosting site like Imgur or Photobucket to send it to me :)

It looks like you made your frames 4 across and 3 down rather than 3 across and 4 down.  You're really close to getting it right.
