lonequeso 1,921 Posted November 21, 2015 Someone's been busy I see how the tiling was a pain seeing as they're all asymmetrical. They look kinda like cotton candy. You may want to taper them a little on the top. I quickly Googled some photos of birch trees. Most of them seem to taper. A couple are full fledged triangles. The ones that have the shape you have there looked a lot more sparse near the bottom. As trees themselves, the leaves don't look bad at all. The above comments are if you're going for a high degree of realism. The leaves are a bit too ppofy looking. There's no shadowing on the foliage, so there's no definition on the leaves. It makes 'em look kinda cloudy. See how your leaves on the ground have a lot of contrast in the colors? Adding some more contrast to the foliage will make it look more leafy. You can even use the leaves on the ground as a reference Erasing small bits here and there in the interior would help, too.Turn down the opacity on the eraser a bit, and try some different brush styles until you get one that can give it a more leafy look. The trunks outline is a bit thick. If you blur the edges a bit, you'll be all good. They're cylinders so the outline should taper. The leaves on the ground look good. If you really want to get crazy, add a few more variations. All in all, they're coming along nicely. Keep at it. You're getting closer. One little side note. I'm going to be very disappointed if I don't see a cat in one of those trees
Rikifive 3,411 Posted November 21, 2015 Hmmmm . . . As for me, these trees look cute and softy! =3 I'm not a good artist and I'm making 9999 times worse trees, so no advice from me, but I like your trees. You're using 'soft' style in your thingies, so the trees are not out of place, which is important. They're way better than the trees christmas trees in RTP. =3 I approve this. =
xoferew 261 Posted November 21, 2015 Thanks for the comments! I've tried to put more shading on and make the tree less poufy, more open -- but I'm not sure how much it shows, because the background doesn't contrast that much. And I'm worried the tree might now look like a dark, sideways, yellow storm cloud... Hm. I also toned down the trunk outline. Any opinion on the shadows on the ground? RTP shadows are so inconsistent I never know what to do, but they can't be any longer. Old version is on the right for comparison.
Rikifive 3,411 Posted November 21, 2015 Yeah, I think it looks better now ~ deeper. About the shadows ~I have no idea, from which side is light coming? More from side or above? If from side, then the shadows could be longer ~ I mean at first it's thin and then it becomes more fluffy (from leaves) If from above, then make the shadow more fluffy ~ below tree in general Well, that's what I think, but I'm not sure. =P
Skysagi 219 Posted November 22, 2015 I really liked these trees, and they're even better with the shading. I'm not really an artist, I just do some graphic-related stuff, but I'm not that good, so, let me try to give some advice... Well, these trees certainly fit the style you're using for your RPG :3 and about that shadow, well... It looks way thicker than the tree's trunk itself and it will depend on where the light is coming from. I'd recommend using thinner lines for the shadows and makind different graphics with different shadow positions for this very same tree, because it will all depend on where is the light coming from. Like I said before, I really liked these trees :3
lonequeso 1,921 Posted November 22, 2015 It looks better now. Zoomed in, a couple areas look a little too pixelated. The normal zoom will help with that. There's one area that sticks out like a sore thumb. The space in the trees where you can see the guys hair. There's an easy way to fix it. Just blur the area a little bit so that empty space gets filled in with semi-transparent pixels.
xoferew 261 Posted November 22, 2015 (edited) Thanks all! I know, the edges are still pixelly. I will fix that. The shadow direction should be the standard RTP one since many of my graphics are original or edited RTP. I can't make the shadows longer without trespassing onto another frame, but I could make them skinnier near the trunk and fatter at a distance. HA! Tiling successful! lonequeso 1,921 Posted November 22, 2015 Yep. That's some might fine tilin' ya got dere. Good work! I never doubted you Charizard did though. You should heard the stuff he was saying. He's so cruel when he's sober....
When Bugs Roam Ur House 656 Posted November 25, 2015 You know you want to give me feedback about these trees. Right? Right? Please? Wow! Geez, those look awesome!! :D I love the style and detail you put into them. The shading on the foliage looks fantastic, really perfect and beautiful! I can honestly say that i really wish i had the skills to do something like that, and that if i ever made a game, i would want something like that lol. I think i might say that the trees could look even better if the bark was a bit darker, and if the shading went around the trunk a bit more, though. Perhaps something like this? It could be better, but I'm sure you'll get the idea: All my opinion though. Also, imo, don't forget that the trunk is a cylinder and that we're looking down on it a bit. So the slits in the trunk might look a bit nicer if they were curved, instead of straight lines. (!)
xoferew 261 Posted November 26, 2015 Thanks!! I wish *I* could do the awesome drawing *you* do. You're right about the trunk. The trees started out much more stylized and when I made the leaves more realistic I didn't change the trunks. Lonequeso: You better keep a leash on that Charizard or I might just leap down out of a birch tree and eat him.
When Bugs Roam Ur House 656 Posted November 26, 2015 No problem. And thanks as well!! Haha, i'm deeply flattered by that. I haven't drawn in awhile, but i will once i find my tablet pen!... : D lol It's easy to overlook small things, or not notice some things sometimes. Especially when everything else looks really great.
