Shiggy 630 Posted January 10, 2016 I was just curious to know what motivates you to draw, write, compose or make games in general . I was thinking about that recently and I realised that personally I 'm just interested in making things that doesn't exist ( and should in my opinion) . I consider that some ideas deserve to be put into form but if nobody do it , I will do it myself. ( Worth noting that I don't consider ideas as unique ,if you thought about it other humans beings surely did the same ) . But this kind of motivation makes sense for story and system but a lot less for art and music for example. That's why I was wondering what motivates other people. As I was writing this,I realise when I create a script , I can also do it as a way to challenge myself or to help other people . I'm very curious about your answers . Thanks to everyone who took the time to read what I wrote and bigger thanks to thise who will write an answer .
littleyuri 28 Posted January 10, 2016 For me, well, most of the time it's because of the feeling inside me... I just want to draw what interests me at the time I guess? And I like to surprise myself thinking, "Woah, I did this?". I am a simple man... ._.
Tsarmina 2,612 Posted January 11, 2016 I think it all boils down to passion. ^u^ I just want to see my ideas materialise before my eyes. It's nice to do it because other people want to see my game/artwork/writing etc, but if it wasn't super supported by people, I would still continue creating! Isn't it all because it makes us happy that we have hobbies in the first place?
_____ 214 Posted January 11, 2016 (edited) I take inspiration from most fiction i play, read, and watch. With that, I create my own ideas, characters, and storylines inspired from them, maybe adding twist that i don't think people have thought of before and i think would be cool (like you Shiggy) And once i have ideas, like Tsarmina, i want to see the ideas and character i create in my head come to life. That's what usually motivates me. at least, that's the best way i can describe it. I'm not that good at things ilke this. magic2345 252 Posted January 11, 2016 What I want to accomplish by making games in general is to see other people have fun playing it. I love watching their reactions. I want them to feel something when they play my game. Why? Because I myself have felt strong emotions from playing games, some even changed my personality bit by bit. It's due to these "moments" that got me to start thinking, "Man, I wish I could make something that can do this to people." Other than that, I guess I just love the idea of creating something. Cookie Ninja 374 Posted January 11, 2016 Boredom requires a solution, solution requires action, action requires decision, decision requires thought, thought requires will. Will is found by the desire not to be bored! In short, I can't stand not making anything^^
+ TBWCS 953 Posted January 11, 2016 I'd say the following: Old School JRPGs I've played. They were my inspiration going to the game making activity. I always wanted to create something like those that I have played. The player's satisfied reaction and experience. When I see that the ones who have played my game are satisfied and when they have that contented look on their faces after playing the game, that is a reward that no one can steal from you. Why? Because what you've made is something they enjoyed. Now imagine if you can make thousands of enjoyable games? That motivates me. AVGN. This guy gave me the spark to bring myself to game dev again. Bad Games. Whenever I see a bad game, I always think that I can make a better game than this. Kinda a drive to make a game that outruns that game or something. My IRL friends and fans. My Social Media and IRL friends knows what I do. They always give me the motivation and inspire me to do game making whenever they cheer me up on my work. They give feedback, they ask something about the game, etc. It keeps me busy and thinking that they want to play the game, thus them getting giddy and excited about the things you're working on. Passion. It has just been my passion to make a game. Well, at first it wasn't my passion, but I fell in love in making games. I want to make it a lifetime business / activity / hobby. It makes me apply what I have learned. Not only it is inspiring and motivating, but also keeps what I have learned significant is practiced. Money. I mean, who doesn't like money? lonequeso 1,921 Posted January 11, 2016 Boredom is a good motivator. With you, Cookie, I thought it was just the sugar rush from all the cookies. What drives me to create? As far as game development goes, let's get the obvious one out of the way. I love videogames and RPG is my favorite genre with FPS as a close second. I kinda mentally lump action/adventure games into RPGs despite that they're very different. Anyway, the original thought to make a game did partly stem from boredom. I was in my free period in high school with nothing to do. I just starting drawing a world map. No idea about the story or characters. Just pretty randomly added rivers and mountains and stuff and some towns. Then connected the dots and actually made a cogent story out of it. Completely ass backwards but it worked. Hard to criticize success. That was the boredom part of my motivation. The other is that creating comes naturally to me. Do I even have to mention Legos? When I was little, I loved mazes. Both solving them and making my own. Same with puzzles. Whenever I play a game that has a level editor, I can spend hours and hours making levels. I made some pretty kick ass parks in the Tony Hawk games I always loved sim games like Roller Coaster Tycoon and Sim City too. If I could build shit I, I wanted it. So really, the desire to create is just in my genes. Other than developing games, I love creative writing. If you've read my posts, you know I have a very vivid imagination. So why not channel that into character and story design for a game? Currently I' creating a game. A very long game; the one I had an idea for way back in high school. I actually went to school for Game Design, but making a game completely on your own in 3D is nearly impossible. There's some things I don't like and a lot I'm not skilled at and I was a very lazy student on top of it. Even 2D is really hard; I wouldn't be anywhere begin able to achieve it without relying on the many talented people here for art and scripts. Not to a quality that would meet my personal standards which are pretty high. I have several things motivating me to complete my game. First, I tried and failed doing it 3D, and I want to prove to myself that I can create a game. Second, I hate leaving things unfinished, and I've spent waaaay too much time and effort to just stop. Third, I know I'd never forgive myself if I don't. Fourth, I would really love to make game professionally. It's really the only career I want to have. This game is also to showcase my skills and maybe actually get myself hired somewhere. I'm 100% tunnel visioned in this. I'm also quite stubborn so quitting really isn't an option.
Rikifive 3,411 Posted January 12, 2016 1. Ponies! One-Project-Specific Buff ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) (If you're making something about something, then seeing that thing gives you ideas/inspiration/motivation) 2. Other people's progress (seeing others' progress, makes me want to progress by myself) 3. Good comments / interest on previous/current work (that's obvious, that things like this makes you motivated, but I feel bad, that I don't have time for further development of these projects atm) 4. Gold (You have no idea how even a tiny project with a tiny profit would help a lot, but I'm sure this achievement is not for me, but I really hope it will change someday, before it's too late) 5. When bored (that's how I started ~ but it happens very rarely now, since I have so much stuff to do and I don't even have that much time for myself (but I have no idea what takes me so much time)) That's all I think.
Lord Vectra 414 Posted January 13, 2016 I have a strong interest in medieval-type fantasy games so that usually drives me to create games like my current project, World of Chaos. If I'm angry, that would usually motivate me to do something since RPG is about fighting. I have a lot of passion for them; when I was younger, I created books that I turned into little videos, and now, I'm making them into games. I'm a huge fan of creation; I love tinkering with it, Like Tsar, I like to see my ideas materialize; nothing is more astonishing that creating something.
Compass Rose 7 Posted January 15, 2016 Honestly; I had so many ideas I wanted in games, and after many fruitless attempts to sell ideas to developers, I figured it was about time I took matters into my own hands. "They don't want 'unsolicited' ideas? Joke's on them! I can make games with the ideas I want!"
lonequeso 1,921 Posted January 19, 2016 It pretty much impossible to sell an idea from outside the industry. Even if you had a full demo odds are really slim. Making your own complete game available for people to play is an awesome way to build a portfolio.
Absurdiness 11 Posted February 9, 2016 That's an interesting question. I myself not only make games, but I'm also a fiction writer (my main vocation) and visual/pixel artist, and occasionally make music too. So I guess I could try and answer your question regarding art and music. I'd say the reason can vary a lot from person to person, but in the end it's always related in some way to what you already said: creating something that doesn't exist yet. That's the most amazing thing about being creative, imo. Ideas are never really original, true, but that's because having ideas is easy: it's taking them to completion what really takes effort. And, when that effort bears fruit, it's so awesome! That said... It's hard to explain what drives me to create, personally speaking. I guess one of the reasons is the satisfaction I get every time that I solve a logical problem (when game making, for example), or get that turn of phrase or that piece of dialogue that is just perfect (when writing), or manage a great color combination or character expression or bit of shading (when making art). I also physically need to feel productive. Otherwise, I get depressed (it's absolutely true. I've tested it) For me, the best way to be productive is doing something fiction-related, creating new worlds, characters, game mechanics, etc. So I guess you could say it's an essential need I have, which can take many forms in many disciplines, but is always the same deep down. Of course, there's secondary reasons, such as imagining how great it will be when x thing is finished and other people get to enjoy it, or, in some cases, wondering if I'll be able to get money out of it (not games, though: I do those just for fun). But first and foremost I create for myself.I can't speak for vocational musicians, though: the only music I make are soundtracks, and very rarely, so I have no experience with any kind of art that isn't related in some way or another to fictional world building.
Ragnos 122 Posted April 14, 2016 One of things that drives me is knowing that people will play or read what I create and they might enjoy it. If they enjoyed it, then it was worth it. Without that it just seems like I'm wasting my time.

Nyapurgisnacht 152 Posted April 26, 2016 (edited) Hm~ I dunno, I think a lot, and ideas for stories and images and all that come to mind. Drawing and art are nice forms of expression, I'm a visual/kinetic learner, but I rather like the idea of games being a sort of combination of every form of art and science. There's so much games can be capable of! So working on a game is really fun, because I get do all these different tasks, and it feels like I'm learning a lot by it, I suppose~ On the more aesthetic side, I like history and culture, anthropology philosophy all the sciences, all that good stuff. Thoughts and ideas, that sort of thing. Sort of why I prefer to be around anyone who knows more than me! -looks around pointedly- Lots to take inspiration from~ Uh being outside and music help too. + Asharonapaul 276 Posted April 26, 2016 I create, for the sake that Deities supposedly do, so I am harnessing their powers But in reality, I find that in writing, some people have thought about motifs or even plot points that I have, but never the entire story as a whole. I am sure that goes for games and music too. THe building tools to a story/game/composition have been thought of before, or we would not know them probably, but not the entirety of the work. For instance, I wrote Cupid's Rising, if you google it, no other author has a book by that name, and I have yet to find a book on the origins of Cupid, if at all, in the manner of which I wrote it. spoiler alert- Cupid was hunted as a baby in my story, and was turned into a bow known as Cupid, because baby gods are so powerful, they can harness the power of all deities in existence. But ya, creation is so important to many things in life. Nirwanda 323 Posted April 27, 2016 I enjoy it, as simple as that. I love the zen feeling of creating a random directionless map and turning it into something interesting, I also love meticulously creating one with a defined plan. I like testing out battle after battle deciding what set of skills and stats will be adequate for each enemy and how they will interact when in a mob. I love coming up with unique items and hoping that some player will use them to create some crazy powerful combination that completely obliterates my game. I like the mental challenge (at least it is for me)of putting myself in different people's shoes and figuring out how will they react and what that means for my story plans. I love making tiny edits to sprites (and attempting to do bigger ones) and there is fun to be had in pouring through a script and trying to figure out just why it isn't compatible with that other one. I like rpg making, period.
lonequeso 1,921 Posted April 27, 2016 Ditto on all of the above. Also caffeine. Seriously, caffeine goes a long way in sparking creativity. Best drug ever! Well... second best. If I'm working on something that doesn't require much critical thinking, I add rum or whiskey to my delicious caffeinated syrup known as soda. I tend to write really good dialogue with that combo. Natural talent and drive + performance enhancing drugs is my winning formula. Hey! I should play major league baseball! (bazing!)
Nirwanda 323 Posted April 28, 2016 Another big motivator I forgot to mention is recognition, sure it may sound petty but we all enjoy when our game gets praised. Basically I celebrate every like my game thread gets and rejoice at every download. And, even if they're not many, I'm very thankful for each one of them.
