Ruin King. What do you think of it?

Recommended Posts

Over the years I've had many ideas for games ranging from mechanics to story plot. This is one of the few that actually makes sense. I'm just going to give a summary of what I have so far. I haven't though of a name for the main character but you will be able to name them ( think link from the legend of Zelda)

This is the story of the King of destruction aka The Ruin King. The story begins in the forest village Treeton and you wake up in your house on your first say as a member of the Treeton guild ( if you want an example of what the guild does think of the guild from Pokemon mystery dungeon explores of a time). After doing your starter missions ( talk to everyone in the village deliver items etc.) you are given your first official mission to go into the apex forest and clear out the apex forest dungeon ( haven't thought of a good name for it) because something in the forest is causing the monsters to become more hostile than usual. You are assigned a partner by the name of Christie and you two are to find out what the problem is and bring back anything unusual that you find. After clearing out the dungeon you and your partner find a mysterious emblem that looks like it has the royal symbol on it is highly reactive to you and you hear a voice coming from it. You and Christie take it back to the guild and they aren't able to identify it and you are tasked with taking It too the Royal family. This is where you meet your second partner Queen Ketalia and she says she's seen it in a book before and it the mark of the Ruin King and it reacts to whom ever is destined to be the next King of destruction.

Wow that toke a while to type because I'm on an iPad right now. I'll answer any individual questions such as game mechanics and other stuff.

What do you think so far?

I will say that I really like how this idea is coming along, and would be interested in playing it!

In order to make a game out of what you have suggested you would determine the length of this idea in terms of the game. Would it be an overall story, part of a series of shorter stories or a pair of quests within a much broader story?

Its going to be told as an overall story but told in chapters so for example this would be chapter 1.

I'm not really getting a good sense of the overall plot from just that, but it seems like a decent start.

My big complaint / concern so far is that the idea seems formulaic, like I've heard it before. Not to slam what you have in any way, but I'd be lying if I didn't say I've heard of stories about small forest towns, about monster-slaying guilds, and places where "the monsters have been getting more restless".

Keep in mind that a lot of players will just drop a game if you don't see anything new and exciting in the first 20, 10, even 5 minutes. What do you have in mind to shake things up?

I would be lying if i said i didnt feel the same. but thats the reason for posting here. as for something to shake it up ive got nothing so i posted here to see opinions if what i have so far is a good start but it looks like its back to the drawing board. Thanks for your opinion it really helped. ill update this when i have a new idea but im keep the overall concept.

It's fine if it formulaic in the beginning. Formulas are a great way to establish a foundation to build upon. The overall story is pretty general. You don't necessarily have to make some complex story with tons of twists and branching stories. Sometimes a simple story line is all you need, and sometimes even works better. The question is: Why is anyone going to want to play your game as opposed to all those other ones out there? That where adding your own style and personality come in. If your going fro a more traditional RPG, and it sounds like you are, character development is huge. You need to be able to make your characters- especially the central ones- unique and interesting. A huge turn-off for me is when an RPGs characters are one dimensional.

Of course the game also has to be fun to play. The battle system needs to be engrossing, and actually challenge the player. Another turn off is when you can just mindlessly spam skills to progress through a game. It gets boring really fast.

Things to consider:

  • Why is the player going to care about what happens to the characters?
  • What type of battle system do you want to use?
  • What type(s) of gameplay in general? Giant areas to explore? Smaller, more focused maps? Lots of side quests? Branching quests? Puzzles? If yes, what types of puzzles? What types of dungeons (theme and style)?
  • Level up/XP system? How many playable characters?
  • Art style? Music?

I'm sure there's a ton I'm missing, but those will become the core of your game. There's no magic order to which or when you should develop when. Often times working on one will give you inspiration and direction for another. Everything ties together.

One thing you should have a clear idea of is your personal motivation. Why are you making this game? A simple question that may or may not have a simple answer. Never forget it.

Good luck!  :)

So what im getting is generally mixed reviews. ill just cover this now. Im mostly working on story right now because a game thats all battling and now story is basically grind until you're bored. as for art and music im mostly using the stock tiles and music and some npc characters so i can get a decent demo finished and fix minor details later. The player caring about the characters is a tough one so i was going for something that hits close to home but not generic sad backstory. on to the more technical side i was thinking about 4-5 main party members. as for anything else really ive gotten about half of a "demo" done so its basically a demo for the demo. Why im making this game? i just want to be able to creat something that can bring happiness and be able to say that something i created or helped create made someone happy. Im going to continue to work hard and focus on the story for right now. thank you for your kind feed back.

Are there any story features that you find appealing or any suggestions on how to structure this story? im honestly kinda lost on how to do this because it keeps leading back to the same generic story.

"Ruin King" sounds like a king of a ancient ruined city more then a king that causes ruin to me. :3

Sorry for the late response i didn't receive a notification so I didn't know. As for the name I wanted to go for something that goes the point across but didn't sound generic like "king of destruction" or something. I'm also working on a better plot to tie that in so I'll have the rough draft for that soon.

I would go with "Terrible Majesty" or "Runious Majesty" if you don't feel like being that biblical. :3

I like the sound of Ruinious Majesty, Ruinous King also works because it also fits the fact that its mostly a title that is more feared than respected ( i try to put some thought into things lol) so calling them majesty would be kinda out of character. I really appreciate the suggestions they really help especially when making a game like this. if you would like to hear what i have so far or have any suggestions let me know

Though with Ruinious Majesty you could have the twist be it's actually a queen of destruction maybe! Maybe even a little girl? No? Awww man... I will get my evil little girl character in some game someday!

Well its a good thing i didnt mention the second main character. The orginal twist was the title is usually reborn onto a male but this time its a female. i got the inspiration from FE:awakening with the Marth/lucina thing
