Meep007 173 Posted January 13, 2016 (edited) So I'm pretty much done with the intro to my game, but I'm still not too confident of my mapping skills... Are they too simple? Any out of place or ugly looking objects? Are the measurements okay? Do these look okay? Any advice would be appreciated. Player Home Exterior: The house looks pretty big when viewing it in the editor, but in-game it looks fine. But your the critics, is it alight? Sorry for the events everywhere Cemetery: Edited: Okay forget later in the week, I had to. I added flowers and some debris here and there. It's sort of similar to how the cemetery near my house looks(the flowers I mean, no the layout). Though, don't all cemetery's look pretty similar? Lake: Edited: Fixed the path. There will still be a bench added next to the lake in the future (or should I leave it out?) Updated it with a second trail. Some Indoor maps: Edited: I edited them again. Added beds with better positioning. Still not any smaller though, I think I have a problem... Trying to work on it, but I like big houses. PS: The people do different things at different times of day, ignore that. Town Map Layout: I'll leave it up even if it's too unfinished to judge yet. I'll update later in the week or something like the cemetery. I'm going to work on some indoor maps first. Edited: I edited my original design to be slightly bigger. I'll be adding buildings to it soon. I almost have the interiors finished. I don't really have an idea of how I'll decorate it yet, but I may give it a more mountainous look. However, right now I'm thinking a forest-y look, hopefully it'll turn out well in the end. I think I'll keep adding to this every so often for more advice, even if some of you said they were good I'm still a little...insecure about, I guess you could say. Just not too much cause, you know, spoilers. Thank you! Edited January 17, 2016 by Meep007
+ Chaosian 617 Posted January 13, 2016 I like your house most of all. It's a pretty good scene, actually. The cemetery is indeed, a bit barren. Some debris like stones or leaves, or even flowers might go a long way. I do dig the separated headstones from the crosses though. Seems classist. The lake I'm not getting a good sense of. That tiny bit of water at the bottom of your screenshot?
Meep007 173 Posted January 13, 2016 Hah, yeah that tiny bit of water... I added the screenshot of it's full size. I don't want the entire thing shown on the map, but should I expand?
Lord Vectra 414 Posted January 13, 2016 Your interior design is exquisite. In my opinion, interior designs are always the best when compared to exterior design. Your other maps are great as well; especially the lake one; it sets a rather mysterious (and possibly adventurous) mood. I'm with Chaosian about the cemetery. You might want to add a little debris to it. The house exterior looks great. I love how the lights glow in the night. Then again, the script is an absolute must if you use a Day and Night script. I like how you have everything fit together. Nothing is more frustrating then having empty space and then trying to fill it with random things but, when you do that, it looks out a place; it is frustrating indeed. Anyways, morale of the story, your maps are great and aren't too big and spacious nor are they too small and tight.
Meep007 173 Posted January 13, 2016 (edited) Thank you both for the advice. I'll see about fixing up the cemetery. Edit: I'll have to post a new picture later in the week. I need to replace an unused tileset with one that has debris that would look good here. Mostly because the fallen leaves look like they're in the Fall season, and the season in my map obviously not Fall. I'mma need to do some searching for a good tileset. Don't wont the same piece of grass everywhere... I added a new picture of my town layout though. Ready for some critiquing. lonequeso 1,921 Posted January 13, 2016 The first set looks fine. I noticed that you used events to fill in tree tiles where you didn't need to. Some of those could have been done just with ordianry tiling. I like the amoutn of detail on the cabin exterior. Just enough that it looks alive, but not crowded. Cemetery definitely needs some more detail. Adding some weeds will give it some needed detail. Some imperfections in the road will give it some . You varied up the tombstones/crosses nicely. I made a cemetery for my game as well. One thing that gave mine detail was some larger 4 x 4 gravestones. Mine was bigger than the one you have so I had a couple. I think just one large one would break up the scene nicely. I agree with Chaosian on the lake. I'd actually want to see more water tiles. It looks like the paved ground is as large as the lake. Extending the water tiles upwards will give it more ambiance. Even with less road, you may want to add something like benches or a statue to make it look a bit more interesting. The town map layout is too unfinished to really critique. You have lots of room to space out the buildings and give it a very rural feel. If you feel like it's too flat, you can add some hills in the middle area. The interiors look good. I don't really like the stone wall in the front with the wood in the back. It clashes a bit. That brick tile doesn't match well with the roof either. You may want to change it to either darker bricks close to the wood or make them wood too. There should be some windows on the front wall as well. One other minor thing. In the middle screen you have a single rug tile under the stair tile. It feels out of place there. If you either make the floor all wood or add another rug tile outward it will flow better. Personally, I like the latter option. I like having at least a couple different floor tiles in my interiors. It's amazing how much something so minor can improve a map so much. Your maps look good so far. You just need to add little touches to make them look more appealing. Use the cabin exterior map as a reference. Try to make all others look just as interesting if not more. Nice work. Keep it up!
Meep007 173 Posted January 13, 2016 (edited) Thanks for the advice, Ionequeso. I actually fixed up another map and noticed I had some unnecessary tree events there too. I guess I'll see what I can do about making the lake map larger. I think a bench somewhere near it is a good idea too. I wanted a more wild feel to it when I began, but since there's a sign in the town map pointing towards 'Insert hometown name I haven't come up with yet' Lake, I guess it's been claimed already. I just don't want to make it too large because I intentionally don't want the entire thing to be shown. But, a little bigger...yeah. I also start working more on the town map another time later this week. I'm in the middle of planning the houses I want to add out. I actually did have some in there, but removed them because it felt too squished. The lack of windows I already noticed and changed. Gonna fix some shadows too. That rug shouldn't be there either, that was a mistake on my part. Thank you for catching that. I'll see how I like it after adding one more though, and maybe I'll keep it. I also like more than one floor tile too. The outside wall brick color I actually like. I get what you mean though. Because of the way I like to style my interiors with (the south wall being the outside wall), I can see how it can clash. The shop was an exception. I'll see if something else might go better with it, then I'll change it or I may keep it. It's kind of like my house. Brick on the outside and wood on the inside. I like it. Differences of opinion I guess, but I like the suggestion, so maybe. (But I really love the color...decisions, decisions.) If someone else agrees, I'll be more likely to. Anyone? Tie breaker? Did it anyway Thoughts? I agree with the extra touches. I might add torches or some kind of light source to the house. Fix up the decorations too. Everyone seems to love the cabin the most. It was actually the most infuriating to create. You don't know how long I spent figuring out how to decorate it. Dang my need for perfection...(But I love it too ) EDIT: Expanding it horizontally was the only thing that could satisfy me. I think it's better, but maybe a smaller path? I also need to find a bench sprite. Added new picture. (The Lake) Added other edited maps. What do you guys think? Edited January 13, 2016 by Meep007
Tsarmina 2,612 Posted January 13, 2016 Hey, your sets are all looking good! The player's home exterior is my favorite; it looks well-mapped and I think you have a pretty natural sense of space and such. (Though I wouldn't mind a few plants or a spare tree or two along the path~) The lake could use some more plants too. I also feel the path is kind of large and blocky and I think a more organic shape and some worn bits on the side could help it look a little nicer as well. c: Your houses are also well-done! I think maybe your mapping sense is intuitive. However, I think they could all be a teensy bit smaller, because those rooms are pretty large! Even just decreasing the width and/or height can help cut out some unnecessary space. It also makes your houses feel more cozy, which is usually not a bad idea. Big empty houses are kind of lonely feeling and also invoke a sense of grandeur (that's why large buildings are usually grand-looking), and usually your typical village home is neither. ^^ Your town layout is nice! I know you haven't put down your buildings yet, but the shape of it is really nice and organic feeling. Good luck! ^.^
Meep007 173 Posted January 13, 2016 Thank you, Tsarmina I know what you mean about the path. Every time I look at it it felt too big. About the houses, I know there are bigger than what some other people do. I guess it's my style or something, and it's so hard to make them smaller because, I want them big! They look better in-game...though, I know what you mean. I can trim them a little. I can already see that the hallway upstairs and the room downstairs can get a -1 width and still look good. Maybe I'll move the fireplace over a little too and subtract a little more width. The player's home is like that too except, instead of two floors, it's just one I think this is gonna be my hardest thing to work on...baby steps.
Tsarmina 2,612 Posted January 13, 2016 Hey, take everything one step at a time You're a natural and you'll only get better from there.
Meep007 173 Posted January 13, 2016 Hehe, thank you I fixed the lake up and broke the path like people suggested. I think it looks better, but maybe a little more adjusting. I'll add a bench next to the lake later too.
