Thanks so much for your feedback, KainLightsworn! Bright and colourful is what I'm aiming for, so I'm really happy that was the impression you got from my artwork. I really appreciate your enthusiasm!! ;u; To be honest, I don't have Luna Engine 100% figured out yet, but I'm learning as I go along. (Saying that probably won't earn me anybody's confidence, but oh well.) I'm happy that you like the character profiles as well! I decided to keep them brief so that people can get a general sense of what the characters are like without me giving too much away. I was planning to add maybe another line or two about their roles in combat sometime soon.

A foul mouthed blacksmith sounds about right  :) Smart move with the content warnings. It gives you some leeway in case you do change your mind.

The drink ninja quest was fun to write. It's my favorite scene so far. My other two favorites are a couple heavy handed ones that will make you depressed.

Well, here's my first big update! I've decided that instead of posting smaller updates as I complete things, I'll do larger ones every once in a while with a handful of new pictures, features, information, or whatever else.

First of all, I've finished the portrait of the fourth party member, Deliane! (Pronounced "deh-lee-AH-nay")

1aOojXR.png

Deliane is 857 years old and has a wind affinity. Those who leave offerings at her tower in the woods say she's an immortal wind spirit, but that might not be the truth about her. She's kind and gentle, though sometimes condescending. She has an incurable disease, but it cannot kill her thanks to her regenerative powers. In battle, she dishes out huge magic DPS, equipping orbs which help her concentrate her powers. Be careful, though – while she recovers a bit of HP every turn, her physical defense and agility are lacking.

I've added a bit more information to Cybil, Vera, and Shaelon's profiles to indicate their roles in battle and their crafting abilities. Let me know if you'd like to see more detailed character profiles, or if you prefer them short and sweet as-is! I could write more if people want, but I figure 2-3 sentences should be enough to give you the gist of their personality without giving too much away.

It seems like people wanted to see some more in-game screenshots with character artwork, so here are three of them! Two feature Vera and Shaelon with brand-new expressions on brand-new maps, and one replaces a considerably more boring screenshot I had posted of Doneath earlier.

Also, while I posted about it elsewhere in the forums, I figure I should properly announce the Downtime feature over here. There are special tiles scattered all around Almance that the player can interact with to initiate Downtime. This will play out a short conversation between two characters, giving you greater insight into their relationship at that point in the story. In some cases, viewing enough Downtime conversations between two particular characters can unlock a new Team Technique. This feature is 100% optional, so you can decide for yourself if you want to learn more about the characters or simply get on with the game.

Lastly, my game studio now has a WordPress site with more information and a Twitter where I'll be posting small updates as I complete things. You can check those out if you're interested. A Tumblr is on the way too - expect that in the next update.

Thanks so much to everyone who has provided their support and advice so far!! I really appreciate it!  ^_^

Ah, very cool. Always looking forward to seeing more.

Downtime reminds me of the Tales of skits, direct inspiration, perhaps?

Thanks a bunch! The system is quite a bit like the Tales of skits. I don't know if that's what I was consciously thinking of when I came up with it, but it probably did influence me.

I like the mapping you have there. Those are some nice tilesets. The top one is my favorite. You have a nice variety of tiles. It looks like a busy place, and the diagonal table gives the room a sense of depth.

I like Deliane's backstory thus far. The magic orbs remind me of materia in FF7  :) Pretty standard mage. Dishes out punishment, but can't take it. The HP regen is a nice wrinkle.

Deliane looks so fricking amazing~ I love that you gave some detail on her combat role as well as some goodness about her character-character.

And goodness, but those screenshots look lovely~ They're also oozing with the characters' personality, and that makes it even better. Also I am jealous of your mapping skills. Ahhh your tiles and everything look so good!

Thank you!! It's great to hear that people think I'm doing well on the mapping front. I'm still fairly new to parallax mapping, but I think I'm getting the hang of it. And yep, she's a pretty standard mage character. The HP regen is mostly there to tie into the story, but it also makes up for the fact that her speed isn't too great, which is a deviation from the usual mage pattern. I just figured it wouldn't make much sense for a person with a frail body to be speedy.

Thanks, Kain!  ^_^ It occurred to me that I didn't really have any information about the battle roles of the party members, so now I'll be posting that along with a brief summary of their backstories and personalities. Ahh I'm really happy that their personalities are coming across well! If you ever want to know where I got certain tiles, I'd be happy to tell you.

Really neat looking game, those screenshots look pretty sweet and the game seems to have just the right amount of humour and story balance. Like many have said, a battleaxe princess is really cool, and she looks great. Love your art!

Thanks so much for your feedback! :D I'm trying to balance out the humour and the serious story parts, yeah. I like it when games have a good amount of each. I'm glad that Cybil is well-received so far, and that you like my art!

Oh, more screen shots! I do like the character busts you have going on. The only thing that does bother me is that the text box hides more than half of their bodies. Though, with how limited RPG Maker can be I guess it can't be helped. Still, your characters look great!

Thank you! I do agree that it's too bad that the text box blocks the characters so much. I might be able to fix that, though, since I have Luna Engine, and I'm pretty sure you can use it to customize dialogue windows. I could try using it to make the text boxes shorter so you can see more of the portraits. I pretty much never use up the whole box, so I might as well. Using LE to pretty up the interface is probably going to be a summer project; for now, I'm more concerned about mapping and getting more major characters drawn.

I did also find a script that places the portraits in front of the text box, but I ended up not liking it much. Still, if modifying the text box itself doesn't work out, then I could give it another go.

Thanks a bunch!! ^_^ I unfortunately have no clue when the game will be released. I'm a full-time student, and it's a solo project, which means that progress is pretty slow. I do try to work on it at least a bit every day, though, so I'm chipping away at it.

Thanks so much, Chadzter! I'm really glad to hear that you like the simplicity of my art, actually. For the longest time I told myself that I had to have "fanicer" art, whatever that means, so I'd try forcing myself to use a more complicated style...and then I'd just slide back into simpler stuff. I decided I would just deal with it and draw how I like to, but if people actually enjoy it, then that's really relieving!

Forcing yourself do something that you are not confident with will not turn out good, But if you do it your own way, You will enjoy it and appreciate it more! Remember that you cannot impress everyone but you can impress anyone who knows how to appreciate the true meaning of art!  :thumbup3:  Keep up the good work Whiona! =3

Hey guys! I have a bit of a smaller update this time, thanks in no small part to exams (ugh). I've also been kind of jumping around from task to task, so there are a lot of things that are only halfway done. Some of those things include the next party member and main villain's portraits. I had really wanted to get them done for this update, but I've already waited a long time to post it, and I don't foresee those getting finished before the end of the week so...sorry, they'll have to wait until next time. :(

What I do have is a short original composition I made for the opening cutscene! I guess this is as good a time as any to mention that I'll be doing some original tracks for the game. I was going for "obnoxiously royal" with this one. Let me know what you think! (Also, if anyone knows how to embed SoundCloud tracks in a forum post, I'd love it if you could let me know. None of the embed codes seem to be working.)

I've also been mapping away for the inside of Cybil's castle. Here's a back hallway and a sitting room:

QXc1vAr.png

RmCqfP0.png

Yes, Cybil can play the piano. :)

Finally, I've updated a bunch of graphics in the first post so that they look nicer. I've adjusted the main visual based on Lonqueso's feedback and fancied up the logo a bit:

Bj1bTTv.png

The main characters' profiles are also images now! I'll pop them under a spoiler tag so I don't stretch the page too much:

Wj5wwgq.png

fIqgezL.png

I tweaked the support banner to reflect the new artwork and logo. If you're displaying the old one, I'd appreciate it if you'd be willing to update your signature, but it's not at all necessary if you don't want to! (Also, if you're using it, know that you have made very, very happy. Thank you!!)

HfWmP88.png

Here's the code for it:

There's one last thing I've done, which is fix the dialogue windows based on KaisoAri's feedback. They're shorter now and I moved the portraits up a bit so that you can see more of them. You're probably wondering why I haven't updated the screenshots to reflect this. There are two reasons for that:

 1. I want to change the windowskin a bit, but haven't had the opportunity yet.
 2. With the portraits in their new, higher positions, Shaelon's hand completely blocks Cybil's sprite in the middle of the screen - kind of hilarious, but it also means I'll have to redraw his arm. (Actually, I had positioned the portraits lower in the first place so that I could avoid having to redraw it, but I guess I couldn't be lazy forever LOL)

So yeah, until those things are taken care of, the screenshots will remain as-is.

Aaaand that's all for today. Sorry it's not much. :< I write my last exam on April 28th, so after that, all I'll have occupying my time is my summer job. I'm hoping that will mean lots of time to work on Jubilee Royale! The new characters will definitely be in my next post.

EDIT: GAH, I just noticed that Cybil's profile was missing her age and had a typo! That's been fixed.
