Yay progress. I really like the mapping in those shots. Very nice tilesets and everything is neat and orderly with a little bit of elegance to it. I have a question about Shaelon. Are you going to make his hat actually turn to a cauldron in battle? That would be a really nice touch if you can pull it off.

Yes, your tea garden song is obnoxiously royal. > : C

My commoner blood couldn't handle it.

Character profile images are always super nice - they're always clean to look at, and your art is really appealing, so it all comes together very well. And the life of a summer college student - I have to take summer school because reasons. :C

Anyways, it was a good update - in a way, I guess I'm disappointed that your song didn't end up sounding like something from Akira Yamaoka, but then again, I'm only really disappointed because inside of me, the little imp thinks it would've been super funny if your game had a OST with heavy guitars, and I would've ended up laughing too hard.

And Cybil plays the piano, eh? I sure hope she likes your game's equivalent of Chopin, because then she'd be the coolest heroine ever.

AHHHHH THE NEW UPDATE IS HEEEERE!

I will never get over how PRETTY your art style is! I love it. I also really love the music piece you did. It definitely has that 'snooty rich royal' feeling to it, which makes Cybil's eventually berserker class really freaking great and hilarious. (I am reminded of Maribelle's Barracks comment about wishing to be a hairy barbarian, for some strange reason...)

Your maps are gorgeous and I love the use of pictures for character profiles. It's wonderful~

Glad your exams are almost through, though! Those are a serious pain to endure. Hope to see more work soon!

Ahh, thanks so much!! :D Glad you like the maps! I told myself I wasn't going to parallax map the castle, but I'm glad I decided to anyway, because I'm really pleased with the results. Yep, his cauldron will be visibly floating beside him in battle (because magic). I also have a version of his portrait without the hat on for when it's in cauldron-mode during cutscenes:

Glad I've evoked the right feeling from it, then. :P Thanks a bunch!! I'm super glad you like the new profile images! I thought they looked a lot nicer like that than just having text underneath the portraits. Then you get to look at the character and read about them at the same time instead of having to scroll down. Ugh, I'm sorry to hear that you have to take summer courses. That sucks big time. :< I can't wait to just be done with the school year...

Yay! It's really nice to hear that people think it's a good update. PFF that would be pretty hilarious. I'm just imagining Cybil with a heavy metal theme or something. I guess that might suit her in battle when she's maiming people with her axe. I'm sure Cybil would appreciate JR-verse Chopin. ;)

Something I realized I may not have made clear - when I said Cybil can play the piano, I didn't just mean generally, but also that piano specifically. If you interact with it, she'll play a quick tune!

THANK YOU! :'D I really appreciate your enthusiastic feedback! Haha, I really wanted to play up the contrast between Cybil's class and her image. Classy ladies can be two-handed warriors, too! Now that I think about it, there are a decent amount of similarities between Cybil and Maribelle.

Thanks again!! Exams are indeed a pain, but I'm nearly finished. At least my last one is pretty easy. I'm hoping my next update won't take so darn long this time!

I like your screenshots.  Mapping seems well done.
Story seems cute and charming.

Now, onto Tea in the Garden

It seems like a nice track, but in my opinion it wouldn't do very well for the opening scenes if they take place in a regal castle as depicted. There's not enough dynamic and variation in the piece. It all sounds like notes from one scale in only one key, also.  I dont really hear any sort of defining melody, although that's just a personal quip.

This seems better suited toward a garden scene or map.   Anyway, not bad! As you learn more in composition I'd love to hear more tracks from you. :)

Well, I missed a semester in the fall while I was in South America, so it's not really an issue. I also got a nifty new motorcycle to drive around now, so my summer isn't looking too bad (who am I kidding, 50cc is a moped, but at least I don't need documentation for it)!

Your statement about a Cybil in battle suddenly inspired me to see Cybil as an axe-wielding princess version of Heather Mason or something. Noooooooo~

Oh, hopefully we see her gleeful face while playing it - because playing your favorite song is always a joy.

Thanks for your feedback! Tea in the Garden is named that because the opening scene takes place in a garden, so it won't play inside the castle. You're right that I ought to vary my pieces more - it pretty much just uses notes from C major, and I was overly reliant on 1-3-5 chords. I'll try to be a little more adventurous with whatever I compose next. Hmm, maybe there's no real defining melody because it's a short version of a longer song. Certain sequences repeat in the longer track, but for the opening cutscene I just used a section of it. I appreciate the advice, and hopefully my next piece will be more dynamic. :) (Also, I'm glad you like the screenshots and story!)

Oh, well that totally makes up for it, then! Woo, enjoy your moped. :D Sounds like that'd be fun to drive arond.

Ahaha, I actually don't know much about Heather, so I can't say if there's any similarity there. I wasn't planning on showing it, but maybe I could have a CG of her happy face while playing at some point, just for fun. She definitely does smile before and after!

Thanks!! I thought it'd be nicer if the bio and portrait were side by side, so folks could read about the character while they look at them instead of having to scroll up and down.

HNNNG Dromir looks so darn good I can't even. Dark-haired villains are my jam. My jelly. For real.

I can't see the fifth party member, sadly, the link is being a bit stupid at the moment, but I'm sure they look as amazing as the rest of the group~

Glad to see an update on this game! (Which reminds me, I should get on that for meself.)

Dang, really? Maybe imgur is being weird. I've tried reuploading her, so hopefully she works now.

I'll eagerly await the Ad Lucem update! *u*

Ooh, more characters and some other goodies! This is shaping up to look really nice, especially seeing that you've composed your first piece of music for the game. Gotta say, it sounds nice. Glad to see that you are still working even when you have very little time.

Speaking of which, I need to get to work on Recollection. But... Nnnngh... I can't be bothered to fix any of the database stuff after it corrupted. I suppose I can finish mapping and eventing. I just feel too fixated on the database... >.<

Thank you!! <3 I'm glad to hear that you like how things are shaping up so far. I do wish I had more time to work on game dev stuff, buuut the important thing is that I just keep chipping away.

Okay, funny thing about Recollection - way back when you posted that "demo" on April 1st, I downloaded it and told myself I'd play it later. The other day I decided to open it up and I was so confused by what happened. :P And yeah, if one aspect of the game is frustrating you, it's best to just move on and work on something else until you get your motivation back. Too bad to hear it corrupted. :(

Good idea. I've just been so bummed out about the database I got nothing else done. I'm gonna at least try to get the first part of my Prologue done so I have something to present. Hopefully it'll put me in the right direction to hopefully finish something.

And you're welcome! I personally can't wait for a demo or something to be released. =D

Hey guys!! I'm sorry it's been so long since I've updated this topic!

I don't regret taking a break to work on Four Eyes, though, because I've learned some valuable lessons that I'll be applying to Jubilee Royale from here on out. One change in JR that you’ll see as a result of my work on 4E is in the maps. In order to save myself time during Yaoi Jam, the vast majority of maps were made with the RPG Maker editor rather than parallax mapping. What I learned from this is that the RM map editor is actually capable of making nicer maps than you’d think, with less time and hassle. The main reason why I had been parallaxing was to recolour tiles, but it was a piece of cake to duplicate a tileset, recolour the tiles I need in Photoshop, and then use that with the default map editor.

With that said, here’s a new map for Jubilee Royale that I’m quite proud of, no parallaxing necessary (sorry in advance for the hugeness):

uIemkaq.png

That’s not to say that there will be no parallax maps in JR! There are definitely times when they’re the ideal solution. I just won’t be using them as my default mapping method anymore; I’ll only parallax when I think it’ll be worth the extra time and effort necessary. This will help me release the game faster, and I promise it’ll still look pretty. :)

By saving time in the mapping department, that’ll also give me the freedom to put more effort into spriting. I had a lot of fun creating original sprites from scratch for Four Eyes, and I think that they helped to visually distinguish the game from other RPG Maker titles, even though I wasn’t using any original tiles. I’ve decided that I’ll go the same route with Jubilee Royale, because even though it takes some extra time, the payoff is worth it.

That's basically it for this update. I don't plan on taking any more two-month pauses with this project, so the next post should arrive much sooner! Hopefully you'll be seeing some of those custom sprites soon.

Daaaanng, beautiful map!

I'll definitely have TML take a look at it, there's a certain village that he's working on with that sort of feel to it. We both need the inspiration, haha.

Thank you both very much!! I hope TML finds the map useful. I'd like to see that village when you're all done!  ^_^
