Yes, novelty items. Weird, fun, different things to add to your game. I have a couple of these in the form of weapons. One is a quest item so while the weapon doesn't fit the game, it fits that quest. The other for the moment is completely random. I'm not even sure where I'm going to put it. Quest? SOme hidden chest? Rare drop? I dunno. There's two reasons I'm posting this. The first is it maybe it will inspire some creativity in other people's games. The first weapon idea started as a humorous request from a friend and evolved into an entire side quest. The second I want to see what goodies y'all have put in your games, and maybe I'll be the one who is inspired.

So here's my two novelty weapons.

The first is classified as a sword, but it ain't no sword. It's a crowbar. It is called "The Lesson Learner". It's Atk power is on par with the

best tier the player get obtain at the time. It has a chance to Stun when attacking. It also lets the wielder use a special skill: Thwack!

Thawk! is a fairly powerful singe target attack high a high chance to Stun and a chance to Confuse. The player will either get his as a reward for a sidequest or just find it in a chest. The quest is a novelty itself. The player breaks up an organized crime ring for some reason. 1920's themed American gangster type stuff. That doesn't even fit the time period the game is in which is late Renaissance-early Industrial era. I think I have to have tommy guns even though they haven't been invented. So... magic tommy guns?

I'm not sure where the second one will go. It is a dagger... sort of. The deadly "Rusty Butterknife". Why? Ever hear the expression "Cut you with a rusty butterknife?" That's why. It will have lower Atk power than other daggers of it's grade, but attacks can cause bleed and poison. It also grants a special skill: Tetanus. It deals normal attack damage or maybe slightly more, but has a 100% chance of inflicting Bleed and Poison (minus resistances).

So there you have it. My silly, random weaponry. What fun things have you guys put in games?

A Giant Sock

I remember in my first game the MC started with a weapon called the n00blade that had minus stats. It had some flavour text to recommend unequipping it but no-one I watched play seemed to trust it :3

I think a lot of people would be against the idea of throwing things in a game without a distinct purpose and I generally agree. On the other hand, its not like the real world is consciously designed; sometimes, stuff just exists :3

I have a weapon called Disappointing Dagger that reduces stats, as well as evasion, hit, etc by 75% but when you level up with it equipped you get 1 extra stat point for all base stats.

I try to have all sorts of novelty items in my games, actually. :)

Nightwatch Nightmares - You can throw bouncy balls to trip a certain character. Of course, this is the same game that considers a flashlight and a guitar to be perfectly fine weapons for fighting a guy with a knife.

Otherworld - After officially defeating each of the Nox-class characters, you can carry around their Nox essence. It does nothing at first, but you can later trade it in for Pyro and Aqua essence... Which still doesn't do anything... Until you have it crafted into healing items and customize your weapons with it.

Aftermath: Gears of Hope - Trading cards as a form of currency and several "upgrade patches". The "upgrade patches" basically just give you more options to choose from when interacting with people. However, no item is as novelty as the heart locket you can get from one singular character in the game, under very special circumstances. The heart locket's sole purpose is to fill the wearer with a sense of love. That's it. That's all it does. It fills you with love. Almost no application outside of the reason you receive it. Almost no bonuses. The only thing being filled with love does is add +500 Humanity Points, +300 Emotion Points and -400 Aggression Points.

Candy Crusader Chronicles - Candy as currency.

I intend to make custom weapon sprites for each of my weapons in my main game, so I did plan on some novelty weapons.

Alex would use a pair of foam swords instead of her usual short blades.

MX321.jpg

Kai would use something similar to the Hulk Gloves instead of his usual gloves/handwraps.

0f3403c0fc19ef16d6e9ac3ca39c41f0.jpg

Kioshi would use something like a wooden sword instead of a katana

GR1608TS.jpg

Tamao would use an umbrella instead of a wand/staff

_don_t_forget_your_umbrella___kagura_cos

Tal would use stones or something instead of her usual slingshot.

b2d8585c885cc1f0e4bf7eb84aa8f6466bb2256f

This is all subject to change, but I do believe in having some "fun" items and weapons in game ^^

As well as novelty stuff, i also plan on adding "legendary" stuff too like weapons.

I want the game to be taken seriously, but I don't want it to be a major serious game. I'll even have some skill names be punny, once I ever finally come up with any names for them xD

Okay, my game has a few too...they're not that creative or fun.
Rusted sword: worst weapon in the game but can instantly poison any enemy (furthermore poison damage is dependant on your magic stat and this sword raises it)

Cursed bracers: lowers hp and m by 15% and all stats by 5 (the game uses small numbers) but you attack twice per round.

Mask of the red death (get it?): lowers your defensive stats but you learn the red death skill that causes poison and confusion to all enemies with 80% accuracy.

Double boomerang: may make a second hit upon return making it extremely powerful

The lady killer: Sword that does double damage to females

Shield of self repair/sage's headgear: constant regeneration equipment that makes the wearer really hard to kill or a constant mp pool

Saintly ring: all your healing (items and spells) is powered up by a 25%

There are a few more odd pieces of equipment but they're less interesting.

Lol! This topic really 'sploded, eh? Glad to see so much randomness.

@Takeo- Having the player actually see the weapons is a nice touch. I reminds me of the novelty weapons in Soul Calibur II. LIke having Link wield a butterfly net  :)

@Guyver- Your's is like a super Macho Brace

I had an item in my last game called "Pile of junk" desc "Pile of junk, is pretty heavy"

It could be sold for a substantial amount of money. However at a certain point in the game there was a temple. This temple had a shortcut bypassing a huge labyrinth, to open the secret door you had to stand at a pressure plate. As soon as you leave the plate the door closes, you are always so close yet so far away.

By now you should know where this is going, leave the "Pile of junk" on the plate and proceed. Lets just hope you didn't sell it by now, else you have to walk the long and frustrating way! The game never made it to testing so I have no clue how players would react when the PC says "If only I had something heavy to put there" (message that pops up if you sold it xD)

Was that evil, I'm afraid I can't stop myself

Love it!  :D At least the player can buy some good gear and items if they do sell it so it's not a total loss. I know I would have sold it the first time through. IF I player through again it would come down to which I value more. The gold to buy stuff or the convenience of skipping most of that level. Could the player also drop the item? Now that would be evil!

I have an item in my test game called "Love Love" which is just a big pink heart that is a singe use item that resurrects and heals all dead party members and I planed to use for in some kind of crafting to make a powerful love staff. It also may have been stolen form a script demo somewhere. :P The only way to get it is to find one of two wondering fairies in one map and block their path so they can't move, then talk to them and they will give you the heart as long as you move out of the way (but only once), I made special code to detect if NPCs were stuck just for this "puzzle". :3

The "Love Staff" i was going to allow you to create with it could sometimes charm enemies and gave the person it was equipped to two TP skills called "Love Love Explosion" (attacks all enemies and can drain and charm) and "Love Love Healing Rainbow" (basically works the same as Final Fantasy's "White Wind" blue magic).

Ah ha! You mentioned that once before. So that's the item the NPC gives you. Neat! I like the idea of being able to craft it. Of course, that also means you can't use it. The staff would be a neat unlockable after the is completed. IF you beat the game without using the Love Love, you can craft it and use it for extra quests and stuff.

So far it would have been the highest value item in the game, there will be higher value items in end game though! So the question is either enjoy riches and suffer pain or live poor and cut through a miserable experience!

It will be miserable for sure, the labyrinth was made like lost woods cubed. 16x16 maps, only one combination gets where you are going! xD (I've learnt since then that punishing players is not a good idea^^)

I love punishing players. Watching someone rage quit then try again means you have done a good job at the game. Plus you get to their reactions and that never gets old.

This idea sounds fun and interesting but I'm not sure it will appeal to the common players.

I'm sure female players who have a thing for silly and funny cartoon stuff will probably love it, lol.

Why you gotta bring gender into this? Guys like silly and funny cartoon stuff too, and lots of female players don't.

Yeah, Killo's right. That's kinda oddly segregationist. Even in non-comedic game then joke weapons aren't rare. With the outfits the characters in Soul Caliber II were wearing, I'm not too sure it was made for a predominantly female audience.. ahem..

OP: You might want to avoid a crowbar in particular whatever you do. It's sort of the universal symbol for a Half Life reference and I suspect that's not what you were going for.

To be fair, pretty much a big majority of games - especially nowadays - contain novelty items.

Actually, would Dead Rising be considered novelty items, or just normal weapons? xD

I enjoy outfits and visible weapons most.

If I ever actually get round to doing my own spriting, I'll probably include a few "unlockable" outfits for the player to run around in. These would mostly be clothing shown in game - pyjama's, undies, swim wear, alt clothing" but that is sitting in the barrel for now along with other stupid stuff xD

The common player evidently enjoys it since bigger games are constantly adding novelty items to there game, whether it's subtle or overused.
