Purple Phantom 453 Posted April 26, 2016 (edited) Yeah, yeah, I know... I should know this... But seriously, what's the difference? Or is that set by the dev? Are they optional? What does tagging something as a Key Item do? Sorry about the very newbie question... EDIT: ...I can't even spell, right now. Guyver 65 Posted April 26, 2016 Tagging something as a key item just denotes it as something of value that should be in its own separate category besides throwing it in with your regular bag of items. You can still use them in battle if you need to, like if you needed a magical rock to beat a boss and it was tagged as a key item. If it was just in the bag with your potions and everything else, the value would just feel diminished.
Chadzter01 183 Posted April 26, 2016 (edited) Items - Normal items like consumables (potions, tent, escape rope etc.) Key items - Items that cannot be used unless required to.(But it can also be an item that the player can use to alter the outcome of battle. Items that can be considered as collectibles or items that may trigger certain event. (lol that's what i am thinking. =3) Edited April 26, 2016 by Chadzter01
Purple Phantom 453 Posted April 26, 2016 Ah, okay! Thanks, guys! So... Using Devil May Cry as an example, the Pride of Lion would by a Key Item, whereas a Vital Star is just a normal item?

AxD141 6 Posted April 26, 2016 Key Items are also generally regarded as stuff whose sole purpose is for the game's progression and the player cannot discard/sell them (so that the player doesn't screw themselves out of the game and can't continue).
Purple Phantom 453 Posted April 26, 2016 Thank you! Makes sense why they can't be sold. Imagine if you accidentally sold the Vampire Killer whip to Rinaldo in Castlevania: Lament of Innocence... Whoops. XD
+ Takeo212 1,079 Posted April 26, 2016 Yep pretty much what everyone says. My best way of thinking about them is; Items: Normal, everyday items Key Items: Important items that are required for story/events/secret treasures If your using MV though, there is also a "hidden item A and B" not sure 100% what they do, but I think they can be used for secret events and such if you have one on you.

amerk 1,122 Posted April 27, 2016 You can still set up key items in items list, same as the makers previously. But the Key Items category was made to make it more easier on the player to separate. Key Items are generally game and story progression items, that can only be used automatically when a condition is met, or grants access to a part of the game that can only be accessed when the player is holding the item, and is usually not consumable or able to be sold.
Purple Phantom 453 Posted April 28, 2016 (edited) Thank you! All of you have been very helpful! I completely understand the difference between normal items and key items, now! Yay! Edited April 28, 2016 by PurplePhantom
Kayzee 4,032 Posted April 28, 2016 Functionally, there isn't really a difference. Semantically, "key items" are intended for items that have a special use in advancing the story or that the player will need to keep around long term. It's really just a fancy way of saying "these items are special, don't discard them". It's common for key items to be, well, keys. Stuff that opens doors or barriers. It's also common however to have key items be important functional items like a monster manual that records the monsters you encounter, or tools for crafting, or anything else that isn't a consumable.
