My first pixel art [Feedback needed]

Recommended Posts

Working time: 6 hours and 25 minutes.

So this one is my very first pixel art. I used my coloring style from my art style(Characters)

Just wondering if this is enough to be a battler?

Is this enough to start my own pixel art shop? :D

I'd like to know what you guys think :)

I'll add the animated version in a bit after I finish animating it(I'm not good at it btw) :)

I'm not a pixel artist, so I can't really critique to much,

However for a first try, that looks really good.

I like the green glow line on the legs and the details look really nice.

The posing also looks really dynamic, imo, and I like it. I especially like the mechanical whings~

I think my main issue on the eyes was maybe the outline itself. It looks messy?

Maybe either try tidy the lines up (erase some rough edges) or maybe colour the lines to a more dark green/cyan instead of black?

Overall, looks really good and I do hope to see the animated one in action :D

I knew that it'd be the outline haha, I didn't really do the outline in the legs properly, i just went ahead and stroke my mouse down. Thanks by the way~ I'll post it in a little while, gotta eat my dinner first :whistling:

I'm so full of envy right now, I love piel art and have tried my hand at it (though inconsistently) many times and I couldn't even dream of doing something this cool. Really amazing job. Go ahead open your shop here and over at rmw if you feel ready. :)

For a first pixel art it is really good, but I wouldn't suggest to open a shop at the moment.

Pro is definitly the line art, this is really good, I guess you already have practise as artist^^

Con is the shading and coloring. As already mentioned, the lines could be more clean and I would not use black outlines overall. Different colors and gaps can make your lines look way more dynamic.

Also, the palette choice (way too many colors and too less contrast) and the shading of the different materials is not on a "sellable" level in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, it is really good for a first piece and I am sure you'll be able to get much better with some practise.

Here's a quick&dirty example what I mean:

Great for a first attempt!  The silhouette alone is intriguing enough, but I think most of the colours work too.  It could definitely do with fewer shades, especially on the legs, though you may end up with a large palette anyway if the green glows are animated.  Once you clean up the borders, one area you may want to consider adding a darker line is by the left knee joint, where the shin-plate overlaps the cap thing. The contrast is nice, but lightening the darks and interior border lines (including the one I just mentioned adding) might make the detailed sections a little easier to follow.

Keep it up, you're already well ahead most beginners!

This is pretty awesome, especially for a first shot. A lot of skills like color theory and shapes can be transferred over from more traditional art mediums to pixel art, but there are a few key differences, however subtle, that it might be a good idea to practice with pixel art in the future.

One major aspect is anti-aliasing. To quote a post I wrote earlier on the subject: "It's a very useful tool to smooth out edges, give your art's lines a more coherent curve, and blend together more contrasting colors overall." The idea behind anti-aliasing is that you can use colors that are in between two contrasting colors, and place them in a way that better blends the two. To some degree, you can consider the purpose of anti-aliasing to create "half" pixels. This can be done between different shades of color, or in outlines. I've included an image below that modifies your sprites to add that in better.

It is also important to note that for the most part, pixel art benefits from bold pallets as opposed to more subtle changes to color. Many pixel artists pride themselves on having extremely low color counts. While the total amount of colors is ultimately up to you, it's always a good idea to be creative with shading and colors, and reducing the color count is an important step in adding "polish" to any pixel work. This could apply to a few places in your piece. Most notably, the shading on the legs really stood out as having a lot of unnecessary shades. Simply the amount of colors, and how they all follow a relatively similar path and shape almost makes it feel as if they were colored in with a gradient tool.

This already feels like a great work, and I definitely think you have some potential for your pixel art. Hopefully this was helpful, and please do share any other pixel art you do.
