Abstract: An alien travels from planet to planet to find their versions of sentience and tries to find a way to save her own

The aen are the sentient race of Aeveni.

They weren't always. It was not evolution that allowed them to solidify their hold on their civilization, but the crystal shards.

These shards came from the center of the planet, accessible only by the deep cavern system. So, the new civilization sent aen deep into Aeveni. There was a problem, however, as their miners began to lose their sense of self. They became mad, plagued with the voices of all who held each shard, as well as the voice of the planet itself. They became known as the Vox. For many generations, the aen learned to use the power of the shards, and by altering the chemistry of each, created a complex civilization, a hive minds with circles within circles of ability and knowledge.

 

Now, all of that is in jeopardy. The vox are whispering. The crystal is fading, and the power of the crystals will soon wane. Without the crystals, the aen will be nothing more than common beasts.

 

They decided to fight this doom, and began storing the cores of the aen that died, to conserve what power the crystal had left. From the last generation, one aen was chosen to lead the search for a new source of sentience for the aen. A youth named Xani sets out on a quest to find, not only herself after a life of being part of a hive mind, but perhaps a way to save her race.

 

The player choses how they will save their people in the course of their journey to ten different planets. Each planet has their own version or understanding of sentience, and while the player/character is originally trying to find a parallel power source for their crystal based society, they are also finding out what it means to be a person, and creating their own basis for sentience outside of what is taught to her.

An aen who has been outside the range of the crystal telepathy before. Having been the one to find the crystal problem, he is singularly aware of the consequences of the AeVani's failure. He is sent with Xani as a mentor and guide, and is quite honorable.
 

M'ox - (slightly difficult to obtain)

A crystalmancer aen who lives near the vox caves and, while slightly insane, has developed a special skilltype known as crystalmancy. With it, she is able to control the crystals of others.
 

Janik - (difficult to obtain)

a sacarax who has come into possession of a crystal, and thus is able to access the telepathic intelligence it creates. He is a sarcastic and violent individual with a rather dark sense of humor. Because of the nature of his crystal, however, only Xani can hear him.

A vox who had no wish to see their planet die. He is convinced that the little headsplace aen will never survive outside the hive, and takes it upon himself to protect her, for better or worse.
