PandaBrady 0 Posted August 12, 2016 Just want some feedback, some suggestions, etc. So, I am working on a game that in the same vein as Suikoden, has many characters (I originally planned 107 playable characters, but instead ended with nearly 70). This game is both a traditional RPG and a Fan Game, as I'm adding Youtubers into it as the playable characters. They will have attacks all based on references from their channels. The Game is YouTubia, and the villain in this has captured myself, my friend, and X number of YouTubers (mostly gamers), and placed them all over the world which has "Levels" based on different genres and video games. So... Any suggestions? Am I crazy?
freakytapir 55 Posted August 12, 2016 70 Characters seems like a lot. Do they each have their unique skillset ? How many character can you use simultaneously ? How will you balance them ? Do you have the rights to use their likeness in your game ? Is this your first Game ? And most importantly : do you already have a working protoype ? I can really advise the extra credits video's on youtube, especially the "fail faster" one.
Lord Vectra 414 Posted August 12, 2016 All I want to know is, is this your 1st game? If so, how long have u been using the program?
Kaneshon 10 Posted August 13, 2016 (edited) Rather than having all Youtubers as playable characters, why not have most of them appear as minor/supporting and offer the main characters skills/items/weapons/armors/etc. that makes a reference to their channels? Having over 50 playable characters (I can think 12 is plenty enough as it is) is heavy work in implementing dialogs and story plots. How would you be able to highlight each character that sets them apart from the rest? How would the gamer choose which characters to choose in their party? Chadzter01 183 Posted August 13, 2016 I advice you not to make a game with many characters because you will definitely have a very...very hard time making character development for each and everyone of them.. But if you don't care about the story and focused the game on "gameplay and action", Then i guess having that many character.. may work(A bit). if this is your first game. Make a game with a short but interesting story and a minimum number of characters so you can have a balanced gameplay and story on your game. =
PandaBrady 0 Posted August 17, 2016 I've made a few short games for personal use in the program for... two years now, one I was working on was based on the Sengoku Basara series for a friend of mine that was obsessed with Nobunaga. As for the character count, perhaps I could make short "Demos" leading their characters towards my own, so they can play them all as a bigger story. Also, Not all of them are playable. Similar to Suikoden, not all characters are playable. Some give you items, food, minigames, etc. I'd probably have 28 at most. For the YouTubers, this is a nonprofit game, and a Fan project. Each of the youtubers has said that fanart and fangames is fine in previous videos.
Nexofficial 13 Posted August 18, 2016 Personnaly I think that having a lot of character in a RPG is key to replayability, but watch out because you'll spend a lot of time working on the system (character/classes, skills, etc.) and making a game is already a big time investment but if you're up to the task, good luck !
