Quoted from the opening scene in the demo:

"There is a story. A story passed down generation
to generation in this land. About a Goddess,
Nethys, and a God, Kuks.
Nethys and Kuks are the Protectors of the Stars.
It is said that Stars hold great power.
One day, Nethys and Kuks had a child. This
child was named Aesep.
Aesep was an energetic little God. He spent his
younger years playing among the Stars.
Some years passed since Aesep's birth.
The young God did something Nethys and Kuks
would never have anticipated. Aesep began
to eat the Stars that his parents protected with
their immortal lives.
Enranged, Kuks banished Aesep from the Realm
of the Stars. Nethys, angered by Kuk's rash
decision, fought with the God.
The lands below the Realm of the Stars fell into
chaos. Nethys and Kuks fought many years,
all the while the world was falling deeper and
deeper into darkness.
This went on for centuries.
Aesep, fearing that the world would crumble
if not aided by his parents, prayed to them.
But Nethys and Kuks were blinded by their
anger, and deaf to his prayers.
So Aesep visited the Realm of the Stars. His words
fell deaf under their celestial war. In an
attempt to get his parent's attention, he
feasted on the stars once more.
The Stars inside of Aesep gave him an
ungodly power.
Aesep didn't understand why the Stars were
so important, or why they gave him such
power.
"The Stars are the souls of the Humans." Said
Nethys.
Souls? Aesep had never heard this word
before. He still did not think Stars were all
that important.
Kuks, fearing Aesep's newfound powers,
sealed him away in the deapths of the Realm
of the Stars.
Nethys and Kuks looked down at the world.
It was in shambles, only two humans remained.
The Gods spoke to the humans, tasking them
with rebuilding what centuries of war destroyed.
The new land was to be named Utopia, and the humans
King and Queen. With the world having it's own
rulers, Nethys and Kuks felt unnecessary, and sealed
the Gate to the stars from the humans.
Now, they listen to us. They listen to our
troubles, and commune with the current
rulers, aiding the world from above."

The tale of the Star Deities may be a children's story, but it is treated as fact. In the world of Utopia, this story is the basis of religion, war, and their way of life. Nethytites believe that when someone is born, a new star appears in the sky. Kuksians think that souls are kept in the Realm of the Stars, and a star goes out when someone's born. Aesepists believe the story is a lie, that stars and people are not connected in any way.

This story opens on Braev, a young man tasked to deliver a package to his Master's colleague, Daemon, in a nearby lighthouse. The person he encounters there is not Daemon, but in fact, an assassin! Braev then sets out to Daemon's hometown, the City of Valei, only to discover that it's been plagued by a poisonous sludge. He meets a girl, Arte, who offers to take Braev to Daemon's house. There, they discover that Daemon has went to the Capital City of Linderr to discuss his idea of a cure for the poisoned city, and they head there. I don't want to spoil everything, you should play the demo if you wanna know more. ;)

OR check out these major plot spoilers!

Carlos is Daemon. :o
The Package is actually the journal of Aesep's time outside of the Star Realm.
Braev isn't the bravest.
The main plot is locating the missing pages from Aesep's Journal and closing the Gate to The Realm of the Stars before the Dark Men find it.
Master Elkwood dies! :o
Daemon shouldn't be trusted.
Arte falls in love!
Celica isn't very good at gathering intel.

Again, Braev is not the bravest. ;)
