Ragnos 122 Posted September 29, 2016 So what are your thoughts on the new maker that they are coming out with. I've seen a few things on it and it looks interesting. Hopefully its not as pricey as MV. Though when I was looking up information on it the one thing that came to mind was: "This looks really cool and will help a lot of people make Visual Novels, sadly this is probably going to be used mostly for H-VN stuff. *Sigh*"
Tarq 746 Posted September 29, 2016 I don't really know much about it. What kind of tools can it even offer? VN's are already super easy to make, even in RM - any challenge is external; writing a good story, creating high quality resources. Then, ofc, there are already free dedicated engines for making VN's; RenPy's been around forever. So yeah, going to be a tough sell for them.
Ragnos 122 Posted September 29, 2016 True, I've used Ren'py before in one project development (though Python can be a real pain. Since it counts whitespace. UGH!) And RPGM makes it able to makes VN's just got to get a few scripts and make the resources and your done.
Guyver 65 Posted September 29, 2016 I can already imagine the steam greenlight pages now, nothing but VNmaker games for pages.
Kayzee 4,033 Posted September 30, 2016 Hey... what's wrong with H-VNs? More smut is good! ...But yeah, don't see the point when Ren'Py exists (though, yeah, totally agree about that whitespace thing), but then I don't see the point in half the crap they sell on steam for the premise of helping you write indie games even though decent if not better free tools and assets exist. I am telling you, there are a LOT of people trying to make a quick buck off of naive people with dreams of making games.
Yuugami 252 Posted September 30, 2016 As far as I can tell, the only thing VN Maker might have over Ren'Py would be the packaged assets. And I don't want to pay the price of VN Maker for assets like those. Ren'Py is free, Python isn't difficult to learn (there's free classes/tutorials over Google if you want to learn, although you don't need to learn too much outside of the basics), and if programming isn't your thing, the documentation on the Ren'Py site is good enough for anyone to be able to know which calls go where. The fact that it's open source is the icing on the cake. Go Ren'Py! May it live long and prosper!
