Hey all,

I thought it might be interesting to post any uncommon things we've done or seen done with the various iterations of RM; things that the engine was not 'intended' to be used for.

Hopefully, seeing what the maker is capable of will encourage some of us to try a few new things. I'd like to avoid this thread devolving into another discussion of whether or not these things 'should' be made in other engines; think of this thread as showing what the engine is capable of, not whether other engines are more capable of doing it better.

Personally, I've only done a handful of 'other' things.

- In VX I converted Wilde's The Importance of Being Ernest into a sort of movie? That wasn't particularly difficult for the engine; just talking and moving after all.

- Again in VX, I made a little arcade package containing DigDug, Space Invaders and Pacman; a little more strenuous since I couldn't script at the time but entirely possible.

- In VXA, I made a pretty comprehensive tower defence game: that did require a fair bit of scripting tbf.

- In VXA, I recently did that minigame that's a bit like those 'somethingsomething Run' apps; again mostly evented since I'm rusty with RM now.

I've seen, and rarely played, some more outlandish things; I remember FPS became weirdly popular towards the end of VX's lifespan. But 2D fighters, platformers, and ofc 3D games have been shown to possible RM. What have you seen/done?

A very big thing people have been thinking since XP even is MMOs. Tons of people say "but rpg maker wasn't made for that!" yet people still do it and like it. There's one for MV currently in progress called Afar on the official forums... and there's like a project here that later someone took over to update but they never finished it, with MMO elements! There's still some people who achieved it though, like that Wings of Freedom or something that that closed later on... and I saw recently someone is making an MMO set of plugins and files for VX Ace called Forjarium or something!

To be honest I actually never made an RPG in RPG Maker. =P I was working on one though, but it was never released, not even the demo. =/

That being said, I've made few random things in Ace.

- Sidescroller Platformer Shooter similar to 'Contra'

- Sidescroller Arcade Shooter with some bullethell

- Silly top-down sliding game

- Arcade game, where you were a block and your objective was to destroy other blocks

And recently:

- Sidescroller featuring Eric underwater

SCIENCE is what I used Ace for. :3

Personally, I believe more in playing to the strengths of your engine, but I will admit, it is neat to see what some people can do.

I know Raven's made quite a lot of platformers with the engine, and at least one text adventure - mostly for his Indie in a week projects. It's simplistic, but I'd recommend people take a look, at some of his work.

I tried to make a full roguelike out of VX Ace once, not just in terms of using a random dungeon script but doing a full battle system on map as well. I guess that isn't nearly as extreme as some other people's uses, but it still is quite the undertaking! Alas, I sort of failed and gave up. I could never get the turn system to work that well, and I would probably have needed to rewrite the whole movement system to really do it right.
