How often do you do the "RIGHT THING"?

Recommended Posts

How often do you help the old lady cross the street?

How often do you open the lift/train door so that that running person in the staircase can come inside?

How often do your admit something being your fault, even though you know the consequences will be horrible?

How often do you help people pick up what they dropped on the floor by accident?

How often do you stop a running thief on the streets?

How often do you stop a fight between two people, weather you know them or not?

How often do you report a crime to the police or simply higher authority of the place you are?

How often do you do the right thing, and why do you do it?

And why is it the right thing to do, what you did?

Just curious to learn more about the users around here.

For example, I just found a rusky website that had download for all the music and graphic packs sold on the RM site and reported it to a MOD on the RM official forums because I can't literally stand RM piracy. Bothers me even more that it's on an area of the internet that RM community isn't likely to bump into (since Degica is english/japanese)...

How often do you help the old lady cross the street?

Sometimes. Cuz brightening up her day for little effort is well invested time in my eyes.

How often do you open the lift/train door so that that running person in the staircase can come inside?

I don't, I push the close doors button. Cuz I don't like sharing an already small space with someone I don't care about.

How often do your admit something being your fault, even though you know the consequences will be horrible?

Always, I will never apologize for being human. Making mistakes, doing bad things for irrational reasons is a part of the human experience. Owning up to your shortcomings and facing your consequences like a champ is what make you a better person.

How often do you help people pick up what they dropped on the floor by accident?

Always, see the first question for motivation.

How often do you stop a running thief on the streets?

Never had the opportunity, so wouldn't know.

How often do you stop a fight between two people, weather you know them or not?

Depends, I respect violence for what it is. If two people want to settle their grievances by swinging at each other, then by all means. I'll only step in if one takes it too far. But if a person is picking a fight or intimidating someone who clearly wants to avoid it, I'll get on it straight away.

How often do you report a crime to the police or simply higher authority of the place you are?

Almost never, the whole culture around ratting people out erodes trust and loyalty. Two things I hold dear. I would only consider it in rather extreme circumstances, like if a child is coming to harm, murder, severe physical abuse.... you get the picture.

How often do you do the right thing, and why do you do it?

I always do the right thing, trying to be the best person I can. The reason is, I want to look in the mirror and be proud of the man I see. Unapologetic and honest.

And why is it the right thing to do, what you did?

Because I don't do what I do to be liked by others. I do what I do because I believe in them, I don't give homeless people money so I can brag to my friends, I just don't give them money period.

I answered the questions first. Because I feel it to be good form before you ask others to answer them. So how about you submit your own reply. ;)

How often do you help the old lady cross the street?

Never, the opportunity only presented itself once ('t'were a man actually) and during my considerations I deemed it as probably embarrassing for the fellow as they often strive for independence. He was a good ways across before I finished thinking about it anyways.

How often do you open the lift/train door so that that running person in the staircase can come inside?

Always. I'm never in such a hurry that I can't spare a few seconds.

How often do your admit something being your fault, even though you know the consequences will be horrible?

Hmm, nothing I do greatly affects other people so I'm never at fault. The perks of solitude :3

How often do you help people pick up what they dropped on the floor by accident?

Often. Sometimes it doesn't occure to me. When it does then I do.

How often do you stop a running thief on the streets?

Never happened but I probably wouldn't engage as I wouldn't know the full circumstances.

How often do you stop a fight between two people, weather you know them or not?

Same as above.

How often do you report a crime to the police or simply higher authority of the place you are?

Same as above.

How often do you do the right thing, and why do you do it?

I've seen enough to disregard morality so probably only rarely. However helping others is often the logical response and harming them require additional effort, more so than my autopilot allows.

And why is it the right thing to do, what you did?

It isn't, necessarily. Nor do I aspire to such lofty nobility. I just act within my limitations for the imminent satisfaction of the majority, myself included, and don't act if I can't perceive that outcome.

How often do you help the old lady cross the street?

I honestly don't remember ever seeing an old lady who needed help, but I can be kinda unobservant.

How often do you open the lift/train door so that that running person in the staircase can come inside?

I do this kinda often, but really there is little reason not to if you can.

How often do your admit something being your fault, even though you know the consequences will be horrible?

Never been in this situation either. Though in general I probably would if I thought it really was my fault, if only because confronting and working through consequences seems better then trying to hopelessly avoid them.

How often do you help people pick up what they dropped on the floor by accident?

If I see it happen and can help I tend to.

How often do you stop a running thief on the streets?

Never seen one. Really not sure if I would or not. It's a situation that needs to be delicately handled, and I might not be equipped for that. Running blind into a situation with no plan can backfire and just make things worse.

How often do you stop a fight between two people, weather you know them or not?

See last question.

How often do you report a crime to the police or simply higher authority of the place you are?

If the crime is actively dangerous or harmful then I would be sure to. Only really was in that situation once, where a homeless person appeared to be sleeping at the foot of the stairs in an apartment building I used to live in. I eventually told my social worker, or they figured it out because of the pee smell. I think we ended up talking it out. In a lot of situations though, the police are better off handling the details then you are.

How often do you do the right thing, and why do you do it?

I try and do what I think of as right, mostly because I just want to and/or I think it brings the world closer to my ideal state. Though what I think is right is the same as what you think of as right. And sometimes doing wrong can just be so fun... hekekekekeeee!

And why is it the right thing to do, what you did?

Everything I do is right by definition! Kidding! :3 See, I happen to more often then not find a little thing called 'ethics' to be useful here. I know most people don't understand ethics, so I will try to explain. See, imagine basic principles that you hold to be true, or at least useful. Something like 'people should treat others as you would have them treat you' might be one, or 'do no harm', or 'freedom is the most important thing'. Now you think about the implications of that, what kind of behaviors are or are not conductive to that mindset. Things can get tricky to call and it's always possible to fanangle the wording in different ways, but in general having an ethical principle allows you to easily think about what kind of things you really want to do or not do and why. Of course, people may disagree about the principles chosen, but that comes down more to personal option and belief.

When morality is in question I try to take as much information into consideration as possible before making my approach. I'm always out for myself but I see no harm in helping one another, even if gain or goal isn't mutual. I live to experience things, this differs from person to person. When something needs or looks like it ought to be done then it's likely I'll just start doing it without much question unless that particular situation requires more knowledge.

I try to make actions without ignorance but by doing so I create my own. There are a number of ways to approach a situation and sometimes the things you want aren't always the same of which someone else would want, this is something I would also consider. There is always a chance that, perhaps, an old lady crossing the street does not care for your help and would not want it. If a person is struggling with an issue then two bodies are capable of breaking down a task more efficiently than one.

At times I act in my own ignorance, I get lost in thoughts and consider the worst of things to be true because in some cases they are. I apologize when I feel I have done wrong to someone in a situation where I would feel wronged myself. People make their own enemies, if a person is out to make more then they will find them easily.

I'm an agile bodied person, something I've grown accustomed to is taking fast action when necessary. If something is dropped and it is closer to me than it is for someone else then I may pick it up for them unless asked not to or if less than two things had been dropped. It's not necessarily that I would like to help a person in all situations, rather that I might if I'm not pre-occupied by other business.

While I'm fortunate enough not to have been directly confronted by many crimes, if a thief had stolen something that might be of value to someone then I might confront them but not so if they were not armed or if I would be clearly putting myself in harms way. Not everything has to be so clearly good or bad, the devil is always in the details. If I were to act strictly from a good moral standing point then there are odds I would not survive, the same standing if I acted in ignorance.

In the case that people are fighting then I might report it to someone who is better capable of dealing with the situation than myself. Everyone has their own business and way of dealing with it I tend to act on my own accord, regardless if it's what someone wants or not. By stepping into a situation where people are fighting makes me involved, I'm not looking to anyone to decide what I do.

If things I have done are considered the right thing then surely things I've done must be wrong. All actions have a reaction, many of which are consequences. Sometimes it's just better to stay in my own corner and sit quiet, but I'd be damned if I didn't think my opinion made a difference. Many people can be disconnected with reality, perhaps feeling what they think is right is truly what is best. Anything can be taken to an extreme, such is life.

In the case that someone might be re-distributing resources without permission I might tell the original creator if I had known it to be an issue. As someone who creates content, intellectual property is important to me because I have realized that not everything is meant to be shared. Over-stepping one's bounds is a sure-fire way to have the same thing repeated back, like karma. Be sure to cool your beans before you eat them, you might burn your tongue.

I try to do what's right at every opportunity but often fail. Selfishness, pride, and fear almost always get in the way, but I work on this every day. I think most people go through life just wanting to be a "good person." That isn't sufficient for me. I want to do what's right at all times, even if I fail sometimes, regardless of whether others think of me as "good" or "bad."

This is because I wish to live in a way which is consistent with my design: God made me good, in His image, therefore I should act accordingly. I don't worry about knowing what is or is not right in the vast majority of situations, but whether I will act properly. I usually already know what is right as long as I can approach a situation with humility, and not let self-interest get in the way.

I cannot imagine myself not doing the right thing, it is just in my nature to do so.

That being said, some of the situations that the OP mentioned are not always a safe thing.

I mean, great, you can break up a fight...but if it injures you greatly in the process, was it really worth it?

Reporting crimes is a great idea, however that too has its' own level of peril, especially if all the sudden those who you reported get their revenge and you're not well able to defend yourself...

Stopping a running thief? Asking for trouble since most carry a weapon and are not afraid to use it. This isn't Skyrim.

Admitting faults...yeah...I hate when I get blamed and I often become obstinate. Therefore, because this happens too often, I rarely take blame whether I deserve it or not.

But that has little to do with doing the right thing, and more to do with a moral compass, in which mine is broken. There, I admitted to being a broken f****** doll. Happy!?
