Rags to Death; from short story to visual novel

Recommended Posts

Coffee is good, but did you know Rags to Riches is an overused trope in many disney-style fairy tales? Forget that. While in college, I wrote a large collection of fairy tales, all of which are satires of traditional fairy tales. I have two collections of ebooks on amazon of them, they seem to be doing well, so I thought I would make a visual novel.

Rags to Death:

Abstract:

It has an openness to it, although to avoid cluttering the screen, some parts remain unknown to the player until a later time. As of now, there are two ways of completing the game which are independent, this will be changed at a later version of the demo.

Genre:

Fantasy, Visual Novel

Recruitment:

at the moment, I and my team are not looking for anyone to join up.

Game Time:

about 15 minutes, there is no save function right now, and it is possible to fail the game without receiving a game over screen. This will be corrected at a later date.

Story:

Rags is a character, named upon death, he/she gave its name as Ode to anyone that asks. Basically, your parents are dead, no one knows who you are, as both parents did not live in any civilized area of the world Kaporu.

You want to have a family of your own, so you find it necessary to obtain chickens. You don't work for food, or beg for that matter, at least you should not. You survive off of discarded food.

At this stage of the build, you can collect one chicken, which triggers the victory condition for the game. But the idea is that when you receive a chicken, your home/starting location will have them placed, and you can interact with them, such as feed them, or collect their eggs.

Even should you collect every chicken, a fox eats your chickens at the end, and you die of starvation/dehydration. Ya, super relaxing right?

It contains characters from all of the fairy tales I have written, from Man Roots, to Deities that created the planet and weather systems.

Character Bios: (This will take some time)

Ama: One of the sisters of the storms, resides in the realm above.

Ayvdaqualosgv: The Thunder Being that shaped the planet into what it now is, resides in the realm above in a vow of silence.

Brother Ottoes: Understudy of the Church of Ursula, generally unhelpful.

Food Lady: ya, her name is Food Lady lol. Uh, she hands out food.

Garnintukin: The Man Root people are laid back, mostly eat butterflies and hide in the woods.

Golem of the Torlu Desert: This dude, can play some excellent rock and roll... Oh ya, if he plays music, he looks more human, or what have you.

Theodore Jin: The wizard that came to Ursula for some magic supplies. A non-binary gender, and friendly, pays well for side quests.

Merchant: Owns the Imporium. His building is not accessible in the demo at current, but it leads to some cool quests later on, and he has lots to talk about.

Opifex: A golden poet bird. The story of the Opifex goes with the Messiah of the Worms, hard to explain I guess, as Nord is not a character at the moment, well not until the end game.

Svalvb: It's a lion-golem, really doesn't say much.

Town-Gaurd: That's how he spells his name. There will be enforcers (like local police) but this dude is more like the National Guard.

Known Issues:

The text cuts off in places, and there is an area where the dialogue choices do not change text color when hovering over them, leaving some to believe there were no choices there. We are working on a highlight feature for the button list text thingy. There is no save function, however, if you die in the game, when you restart some variables do not reset, the init function is being reworked.
