A visual novel Point and click with puzzle elements like Professor Layton Series

Recommended Posts

Hi guys.

I know it a long title, but i can't find anything for this topic question that i had for a while..

I want to make a professor laytonesque type of fan game, where you click on the background to interact and characters are standing there animations until you hover your mouse over them and click on them, this is my features that i want tin the game:

·       Point and click visual novel.

·       Control the mouse over an custom interface

·       Clicking on the events on the background images to access mini puzzle game.

·       Dialogue boxes with character animations

·       Custom menu and map for movement

But the problem is this:  (i don’t know which game engine)!!!

And indeed, i thought i could use rpg maker vx ace or mv, but... i can't seem to have my picture background interactive so that you can click on objects and talk to people for example and that if you click on a bush and a puzzle mini game appears...

All the point and click game engine that i searched and researched have character moving when the mouse point to a certain spot but that is not what i want...

sadly i can't find it anywhere...and unity isn't my first choice because of the programming, and visual novel engines can do so little about background image interactivity..

I hope someone knows a solution to this.. otherwise i can other maker rpg and horror games but i wanted to try point and click visual novel style like the professor layton series.

Well that's all i have to say..

Goodnight.

It is possible to code these features into RPG Maker but you will use almost nothing out of RPG Maker (maybe the code for scenes and windows I guess) so you might as well use another engine.

I don't know much about other engines so I can't tell

This can be done in RPG Maker MV quite easier rather than in VX Ace. The thing with VXAce is that it doesn't support the mouse by default, so you'd have to use a Mouse Support for Ace, and most of the time some scripters don't like dabbling with something they aren't familiar with.

Though yeah, in MV, most of the things you need would be easier to achieve.

Thanks for the reply, but how can i make the picture background interactive instead of using a map?

I don't want to use tilesets in my game, i don't even need it, if you watch a playthrough of professor layton, you will notice that (indeed it's on a DS with two screens i know that..) they are using background imagery and character animations to give life to the story it's presenting.

If you can explain how to make the picture interactive instead of using tileset maps, then i can't thank you hard enough.. it's so difficult to find THAT type of gameplay.

see you soon!
