Lovecraftian Horror project (Looking for team)

Recommended Posts

Hi I'm scumrat1,

Some of you might know me from those posts I made a while back discussing quest and character design.

I'm currently working on a small Lovecraftian horror game titled "The King in Yellow" which I plan to release for around $1-$5 per copy (Depending on team size). The game is set in the 1500s in a fantasy land. The main character is an Inquisitor (A sort of freelance private detective/ Bounty Hunter).

Summary of the plot: A bitter war of attrition has broken out between the two main factions on the continent of Itos, with both sides winning pyrrhic victories in major key battles. The overwhelming bloodshed awakens an ancient evil known as "Hastur" which falls from the stars into the ocean during a major naval conflict. The player who is investigating the disappearance of a dukes son discovers a strange yellow symbol referred to as "The yellow sign" which when viewed drives people to madness.  The player must use all of their wit and cunning to unveil the mystery of the yellow sign and defeat Hastur before all of Itos is consumed by the madness of the King in Yellow.

Gameplay: The player can engage in combat with enemies similarly to other JRPGs, however, combat will typically be a very costly and dangerous experience. The player will have to locate clues and piece together the stories of what happened at a particular location (Weather the player gets the answer right or not is left ambiguous on purpose). The player can recruit companions which will provide them with various bonuses in combat, investigative skills, medical skills, etc.  Companions will experience perma-death in order to ensure the player takes each challenge very seriously. The player will also have basic survival needs such as food, water, antibiotics (if sick) as well as a madness meter (if a players madness meter reaches 100% they are thrust into a very difficult battle at which point the meter is reset to 0%)

The art style of the game will be PVGames beautiful Medieval packs ( which I cannot recommend enough)

I'm looking for the following positions

Quest designer: Someone who can help design exciting quests and entertaining quests. You will mostly be handling Side and Character quests, as the main quest line is pretty much completely mapped out already. If you'd like to make changes or feel that something in the main quest could be better please let me know about it, and we will take a look. (I'm very open to criticism and making changes that will make the game better.)

Dialog writer: Confession time here's what I got, my fellow designers will tell you I'm bad at writing Dialog. With that said I'm looking for someone who can take the dialog I've written and make it less horrible. If you have a knack for writing dialog then this is the position for you.

Voice actor: I'm currently looking for four voice actors, two male, and two female.  You'll be voicing various characters and working with the Dialog writer and myself to make sure the characters of the world feel vibrant and alive.

Lore builder: This game's lore is heavily based on the works of H.P Lovecraft, and I've worked very hard to insert easter eggs into the main story. I'm looking for someone to help construct the lore of the game around the brilliant and horrific mythos that H.P Lovecraft created.

While these are currently the only positions I'm looking for feel free to contact me if you have another skill or talent you think you could bring to the game. (Writing, Map Design, programming, etc.)

You can reply to this post or contact me via the forums chat system for more information.  Be sure to mention which position you're interested in, and if you've worked on previous games (even if they never sold, or got past preproduction) please tell me about them!

Upon being accepted onto the team you'll receive a few documents that you should read over. These include the G.D.D, character cards (Basic info on each main character), and long-form plot summary. I have a production goal of two weeks on this game, which I understand is a pretty short time. Once production is done we'll move onto bug and gameplay testing, at which point you may be contacted again to help fix any issues discovered during the testing period.
