JANK 12 Posted November 2, 2012 bump for adding like 8 tracks.... anymore feedback? Should I keep working on music to share with the community? BTW does anyone know of free software for increasing the volume on audio files? All the ones I found cost money. I noticed my tracks don't quite match the rtp stuff in terms of volume. TaintedSun 3 Posted November 2, 2012 Personally, I think you should keep working on music when you have the time- they're great! And no, I don't, sadly- though I should think Audacity has that function (haven't really used it much)...
JANK 12 Posted November 2, 2012 You're right Audacity has an amplify feature. I just started using Audacity so I'm still learning it. Although some of my tracks are already clipping in Audacity and they're still not as loud as the rtp. I'm not quite sure what to do about that, I'll ask around a bit. I think most of my tracks are okay in RPGM I just need to re-upload a couple of them that are too soft. The orchestral one has really obvious clipping in the loud sections though. Thanks for the comment.
djDarkX 11 Posted November 2, 2012 What you need to do, if you wish to bring out the full sound of your music is to work with EQ settings and a compressor upon render. That's what I do with my re-arrangements and remastered stuff. I'm working off the MIDI files from old RPG Makers and I can make the stuff that needs to be at the fore come out and give it a fuller sound with EQ, Reverb and the Compressor on the Master Track. What software are you using for your rendering and sequencing?
JANK 12 Posted November 2, 2012 Thank you for that very helpful post. I've never really worked with EQ levels before, I need to look into it. I really have no idea what they mean lol. I know I can do all that stuff in Sibelius. Normally I just control the volume with dynamic markings and the built in mixer for relative levels and that's it. I pretty much let the software do all the work for me. Then I export either as an audio file or as a MIDI which I need another program to convert to audio (I'm also looking for a free program that does this if anyone knows of one).
djDarkX 11 Posted November 2, 2012 (edited) What are you using for instruments? Soundfonts I'm assuming? If so, use Synthfont. It's free, but has a nag screen if you don't donate. I did as it was well worth the money. After I aquired some sample libraries, I switched from Synthfont and SF2's to high quality audio via SONAR and VST's. Also, EQ can be a powerful thing, same with the compressor or limiter. Compressor and limiter and basically the same thing, but with different variables to work with and different methods of doing it. Als, yes, EQ can be difficult, however once you learn it, it's pretty awesome what you can do with it. Setting volumes, velocities and the such is good, but won't get you the right effects some times. I learned that the hard way. xD EDIT: Quick addendum to what I posted here. When it comes to working with EQ settings, work with them in realtime and on individual instruments, rather than just on the whole piece. Example: Track 1 - Channel 1: Strings Section Track 2 - Channel 2: Trumpet Track 3 - Channel 3: Church Organ Track 4 - Channel 4: Drums Track 5: Master Output Try applying EQ settings to individual instruments and also on the master track. Mind you, this is going off what I use in SONAR, but the principal is the same. If you end up using Synthfont, assign a Bus to each channel that has a single instrument mapping and play with the EQ in realtime, solo then as a whole, to see where you can improve the quality. It takes some practice, but you'll get it. Finally, on the Main Bus, which is the "Master Track", you can apply another global EQ and also the compressor to pull up the volume based on your settings. It's a lot of work, but that's music for ya. lol Edited November 2, 2012 by djDarkX
Joel 1 Posted November 3, 2012 Really like your music!
JANK 12 Posted November 4, 2012 Thanks for all the great advice. I will try Synthfont when I get the chance. Really like your music! Thanks
djDarkX 11 Posted November 4, 2012 You're very welcome. If you need more help or advice about mastering audio, let me know. I'm still kinda new to it, but being self-taught and knowing what to listen for and studying the way the sound mixes, I've learned rather quickly.
Shablo5 8 Posted November 5, 2012 |Your stuff isn't so bad, some pieces are good, for sure. Although most of your tracks are minimal, and i'm not too much of a fan of the "Video Game Music" style where you produce music that should sound like real musical instruments, but don't.
JANK 12 Posted November 5, 2012 I understand where you're coming from on the pieces being minimal. I'm always better at coming up with ideas than I am at fleshing them out. Not that I don't know how to, but I'm usually too lazy to or would rather start something new. The same goes for working on rpgm projects, so I really have to try to force myself to stick with one thing. I may consider lengthening some of the shorter tacks in the future. Your comment about video game music though I don't agree with at all, but of course you're entitled to your opinion. First of all, it's all video game music. It is designed to be used in a video game. Second of all you say that they should sound like real instruments but don't, well the majority of these tracks actually use samples from real instruments (some do use midi sounds). And I don't see any reason why electronic/synthesized instruments need to be included in music created for a video game. My goal is to provide of variety of options, as it should be apparent by the fact that just about every piece I've uploaded is a different genre/style of music. I'm not trying to cater to one person's taste, but to just provide a little of everything so that someone might find something they could use in their project. In fact I'm only planning on using one of these tracks for my own game, the rest don't fit my game at all. I am working on an adventure/airship theme which I will also use in my game and upload here later. I haven't even started with battle music yet but I plan to do some later. I'm really trying to focus on my game but I will be composing music along the way. Most of these I actually wrote years ago, some of which I left unfinished and only recently thew together to upload here, just to have something to share.
Sana 6 Posted November 5, 2012 Your music's pretty good, but there's no download button for these? Unless I'm just not seeing it anywhere.
JANK 12 Posted November 6, 2012 lol you're right. I didn't realize you need to click a button in the setup to make them downloadable. I was afraid for a second there that I needed to pay to become a premium member just so that people could download my music for free. I was like...seriously? They're downloadable now. Thanks for pointing that out.
Kadyn6060 11 Posted November 6, 2012 Nice, you fixed em! am definitely gonna try to find places to put a couple of these to use in my project xD Thanks!
JANK 12 Posted November 15, 2012 (edited) I finally added a new track. It's that adventure theme I was talking about earlier. Check it out if you're looking for some airship music. Also updated the "main theme" track so there's not as much clipping. The dynamic range isn't as wide as it was before. Also added a new choral piece under scenes. This would be good for a funeral scene. One more new one. A battle theme! Edited November 16, 2012 by JANK
JANK 12 Posted November 22, 2012 (edited) Added four new tracks, Mellow Sunset, Ruins, and Battle Theme02 and...the epic boss battle theme. Enjoy. Edited November 24, 2012 by JANK
