Screenshot Critique Thread: Read Rules Before Posting!

I was going for Japanese, the floors are wooden, and they're from the Samurai RTP. It's also big because it's the master bedroom as well. It's one part of one big mansion/castle in general, so..

Suddenly I imagine about a bedroom with a beautiful garden outside.

So the left part is the bedroom, and the right part is the garden.

It's basically a mixture of inside and outside tiles.

I'm not saying you have to make that kind of map.

Just perhaps it can be an inspiration for your future maps.  :)

Wait, why does the master bedroom have a kitchen in it?

you're a mind reader, because i was gonna do a garden

Wait, why does the master bedroom have a kitchen in it?

Because the Master Bedroom is a small house inside of a large ass castle

its also reserved for the imperial prince of that province, and his lady

Then it sounds like a "villa" or something, rather than a bedroom?

@EpicFILE: I think with the right bit of shading you can make that look a lot steeper, which could turn that icy river effect into the cliff you were going for.

This... is literally the first thing I have ever made completely from scratch. Throughout the game, the player will have images pop up in this style. It's meant to be a "This is what you see" sort of thing whenever something major happens. What do you think?

Context: Dark-skinned Archer, one of the main character's friends and teammates, stumbles into the house you're investigating, obviously bleeding out.

I like the background! But to be honest--and it may be partially my screen's lighting right here--the archer just kind of looks like a slightly armoured black blob, and on the left (I'm not sure what that is? Sorry :( ) I just see a larger black blob.

Odd. I don't see that on my screen. The blob on the left is a plant.

Cool idea, Lucid!  I can see the plant and the guy clearly.  The guy's face is in silhouette, right?

@xoferew: It's a girl :P But yeah, her hair is coming down over her face.

@thejaxinator: Don't forget to leave critique on a past post, or the mods will growl at you! :P As for your map, there's a TON of open space. The ceiling looks enormous, and I'd imagine that space being better utilized with giant windows, loft areas, etc.

*growls* Just kidding :) but jaxinator, don't forget! Like LucidK said, the room is huge. And I think no one needs that many stairs in a small house like that just to go to a second floor :) You could easily move the shelf behind the chair, the dining table into the corner where the shelf was, and end up with a map half the size that can still easily fit everything you have currently.

Like this House

It's way too big and empty, I think you could reduce that size a lot more to make it feel better and more natural.

My commercial game's like 97-98% done after three years of making it. Have a Prison Guard Demon for it.

@LucidK:

The idea of going first person view at some point of the game is cool!

I like the bricks' texture.

@thejaxinator:

If there are only few objects, perhaps you can make the room smaller.

That way it'll look more efficient.  :)

@Tuomo L:

Amazing as always!  :D

Like this House

I realized I totally forgot to add, you could add a carpet and such to help spruce up the house if nothing else.

@Jax - I wish I could like that house, but as most have pointed out there is just way to much that can be adjusted. If you look at the size of your furniture/windows/everything else and compare it to just how crazy giant your walls are, you'd notice that the walls stand somewhere around 50 feet tall. Now I personally would never live in a house that was that tall, especially when you have another floor 50 feet above it with 50 feet worth of stairs to walk up to get to it. The person living in that house must be a fitness buff, and just has all the extra space and size in order to make them move around quite a bit when they move.

Honestly though, it's just too dang big, I'd take a look at almost any other map on this topic to get some reference and completely delete that room and try again.

@Tuomo - I love the design of your characters, it is practically the whole reason I check this thread lol. I've yet to see one that I think you could improve upon, the hand drawn aesthetic is a very nice touch. As far as the maps go, they are well designed and have a fell for rmxp, which was one of my favorites for maps, so that is a plus in my book. Square rooms are just boring!

@EpicFile:  Your parallax seems decent but it makes me think that the game is designed so that the player can walk diagonally, it has that aesthetic. Can they?

So here's the new message background of my game as well as the new font size for the dialogue. What do you all think?

Yes.

I'm still kinda unsure about it, though.

Honestly I haven't even decide if I'll use parallax or go tileset all the way. :/

The parallax is still experimental. xD

The new font is great.

Although I feel the bold old font and the new one are not compatible?

I think the font for the name needs some modification to fit with the new one.

@Epic: Yeah, about the name; I actually checked the message options and there doesn't seem to be a way to change font or size or anything with name windows. Otherwise I'd have the same font size and just bold and italic it. :unsure:

@Tuomo

First time I comment you, newbie in the community, so I'm not sure I'm the best to say something... Character design is great (even... ESPECIALLY the pixel charset: love the girl in the prison map), and the map construction too, love the colors.
Have you considered adding some soft lights (I refer, for example, at it seems to be the entrance of the 'ice cave') or these maps in particular are free of them? Great jobs even without, obviously!
Three year well spent, I'd say!

I think it looks good but its like you've tried to put a limited amount of furniture into a room thats too big, you'd be better off making the room smaller so it looks fuller

Hi guys, I've been trying to create a village home but kinda stuck for clutter ideas, any suggestions?

Kinda nice for me! A lot of little rooms are good with limited space and furniture.

Only one advice, can you put the "top" of the wall on the roof, like the other walls, on this version? (on the point, what version is this? Never seen ever :o)
