Screenshot Critique Thread: Read Rules Before Posting!

Recommended Posts

@Jonnie: I don't mean that kind of help. What I meant was, I want to work on the graphical aspect of the menu, but I'm still fiddling out with the layout. So instead of feedback on the looks, I was rather hoping on feedback on the layout of the information.

@Nicke: Nah, I don't really like to work with such a big resolution. I like the slightly movie-like aspect widescreen gives. Also already got too much interfaces designed, so it wouldn't work well with my current ideas.

About your map, I like the how you used the rocks to add detail to the cave. All those small pebles makes it look natural. Howerver, there are two things I don't really like about the map:

First, the cluttering of the plants. It's... too centered around a single point. Is there a reason for that? If not, you should spread it a little more around the map, or add some more detail in the upper parts.

Second, the colors of the plants are rather bright. Those green mushroom look really weird between all red.

@Emerald: I am using a tileset from someone else so I figured they had the right tone for it but I guess it is to red so yes I will fix that. I might actually remove the plants since I don't know if they will grow in this particular cave :P

@Emerald: What kind of information do you NEED to show besides your 8-party-member display? Do you really want to arrange the actual info around the 8 characters? Or will you click on one of the characters, and then the info appears in the window?

You should describe entirely what you want to display and what shall work how.

@Aeris: 10 chars ;)

Really all I need to display is information regarding the characters. I was thinking about showing Health, Mana, TP and Exp bars, along with level names clases and a picture of the character, but yeah.... Ain't gonna work with what I have xd

Furthermore, around the layout will be a few commands. There's at least one menu to find all general information and the stat menu will display practically all information about a individual actor.

@nicke : its alright , i understand . + that screenshot looks awesome , i would recommend erasing/relocating one of those 2 bloodied grasses .

So my brother bought the new photoshop so i decided to test it by making a futuristic title screen :

I am also thinking about opening a shop to make his for other ppl but i don't know if i am good enough or if i will have the time.

(ps:personal use ^^)

@Emerald:

Yeah, but, what I mean:

In your screenshot, you have those 2 characters + extra space for 8 more. Let's call that the "party area", yeah?

What I asked was: When we assume that your party area is full, WHERE will the character info be shown? Does that need to fit around the party area for all 10 chars? Or will you click one char and all the info of that char will appear in the party area (thus replacing the 9 other characters)?

@Artorias:

I think the "Project" isn't clearly readable enough, since it's red on red. You could work with a light glow around that word, or change the hue of the red in the background (since both of the blue tones (in the back + for the word "Lancelot") are not the same either).

As for a further constructive critique: The title screen imho doesn't really show what the game is about. It looks futuristic, yeah, that's of course clearly visible. And if you don't want to hint at something else, that's fine as well.

But apart from that, I find it sad that there is nothing more that makes me curious, "hints at something".

@Aeris: The basic information will be shown like it is now. Detailed information will take you to a different window entirely.

@Artorias: If you've got the time... Open that shop. Open it right now. That's an order.

@Emerald: Oh, so I don't see a problem. If you just need to display the name, graphic, HP + mana in that player area, where's the problem? It looks just fine, and not too crowded, I think. If you want to make absolutley sure, show us a screenshot with "max content", so put everything in there, displaying a situation where everything is full.

I think i shall open one soon Emerald ^^

Aeris : that background is just temporary (i am testing some things , because the game involves alot of different things...and i am going to take your advice on the word "Project" i think i will either change the colour to white , or a more shiny red .

changing to white because :

The main character is a white robot built to kick some butts !!!

Reworked a little bit :

Hey guys, need some advice on the size of my houses.  Kind'a dislike the chibi style characters, but I'm not making everyone from scratch so...  do you think these houses (and windows) look too big for the style of character?

Please note: These are just samples, the maps are blank so it is empty... and the trees/plants are just for simple decoration.

I've been working pretty hard on my tilesets, but I've only just begun on the outside ones.  So far... I really only have angled roofs, some edits to walls such as both of the ones shown above, those windows, and the trees and plants, etc...

Edit:  Here's what I might end up going for my Town Hall - still missing elements, but I think it has potential.

I didn't think that was required each post... I have already commented on four other peoples screenshots previously (you can even see this a couple pages back) and this is the first screen shot I have posted.

@Artorias

That title screen is amazing! I love it!

@Gawaine

It's just the doors that look too big for me. Other than that I love the houses look very well done.

I'm not a moderator here but I understand the thread.

Most people, when they leave a comment leave it on the last screenshot to be posted. If you post a screenshot before someone else has received feedback without leaving feedback yourself you may potentially be depriving someone of any feedback at all. This is a thread built upon consideration, and so this rule still applies per-post.

I hope you understand why this is. Certainly you wouldn't want to be that deprived individual.

@Artorias

Nice titlescreen. I don't see anything wrong with it. Have you considered animating it though? I doubt it'd be hard with how it currently looks. \

@Gwaine

Most all your tiles look good. Is this Mack? Nice job reworking it. You're doing well making it look good.

My only concern is the "Town Hall" board. I think ti'd look much better as either a sign next to the door or directly above the door. It looks odd sitting on the top of the roof.

Meanwhile, I have a CMS I'm working on. All evented. I would appreciate feedback on the aesthetics.

This is being reworked. I feel I need more style to the background of the CMS. However without a full theme in place I'm not sure what that style should be. As is it's pretty generic. So perhaps maybe layout ideas or something would help. I know the buttons could take up more space. Is the palette boring?

This is the custom skill menu. It's not too bad. I got most the buttons decided on. The style is still rather generic but I think I can live with that. And the buttons should fill up a lot of the empty space as you acquire the skills. Does it convey properly what you should do in this screen though? Is the palette too boring?

Also I'm using a CBS I made. I had to create custom layout to allow people to know what's going on and all that jazz. I'm wondering how the layout looks to people. Appealing? A turn off?

All of it can be seen in action if you care to weigh in on the mechanical aspect as well.

Okay, so there seems to have been some confusion between the rules setup by myself. So I've updated the rules to reference these confusions:

You must leave critique on ANY previous screenshot. It DOES NOT have to be the last one you see.

If you have already left feedback on a previous post, but then post your own image to critique. You are STILL required to give feedback to a DIFFERENT screenshot.

This is simply due to respect for other developers. It's not exactly hard to leave some advice on a previous post. It is common courtesy. We are all here to help each other, as is the point of this thread.

Basically, to avoid any problems. just leave Critique on a screenshot in the SAME post as your thread. If you want to leave additional Feedback, without screenshots that is brilliant, however you are STILL required to post more if you post a different screenshot.

Thanks for your understanding.

No Mack.  Straight RTP and my edits.  Trying not to use anyone else's stuff other than basic RTP right now.  Certainly slows things down but oh well.  I have about 3 inside tiles almost completed and almost 2 outside tiles (1 is primarily those slopped roofs however, so that does take up a lot of space...)  The Town Hall sign was a 30 second job just so I'd remember, "oh yeah, I was thinking town hall for that one" lol!

I like your CMS, CSM and CBS!  Are you thinking about adding the word to go along with your CMS?  Right now, being new to RPG Maker, having never played a game made by it, I wouldn't know exactly what each of those icons is for without going to each first.

With the CSM, I find the test a little hard to make out.  It's a nice font and I like the coloration, but it's not 100% clear do to the size of it.

I really like the CBS!  But again, the font is a little jaggy.  What are the X's for?

@ Jonnie91 - Although I'm not a fan of 100% forced feedback, now that your rules in this thread absolutely reflect your previous statement, this can be done.

@Gawaine

It's not hard to give abit of feedback :) It just means people have to give to recieve. It's not a big deal JUST to give a couple of lines of feedback, for each time you expect feedback yourself, it reciprocates itself, the more feedback you give, the more respect you gain from other members and the more feedback YOU personally will recieve.

It is your decision to post here you are NOT forced.

@Titan:

I don't like the look of the font. It doesn't fit neatly in between the buttons, it also feels like you've squashed them down alot in the second screenshot. Also is there a plan for all that additional space? If not then I'd suggest moving it around slightly, as it all seems rather squashed up to the top when it could be spread out more evenly with clearer text.

It's true it's not hard to give feedback, but as you can see, I've commented on 5-6 ppl's screenshots and posted my own once so of course I wasn't expecting to be called out on not commenting on someone's work.  If I comment on every screenshot and then go to post my own, I have to technically go back and come up with something to say about screenshot I've already commented on.  Anyhoo, moving on, lol.

@ Nicke - I really like the segmentation of this one better. One thing that bothers my eye is each column is different widths and just looks a bit off but other than that, looks very nice.

Thanks!

@Galv: Yes the width might be off but they need to be so since there will be a weird spacing on the status window (the ones with the faces). I rather use a long width on the detail window since that will eventually fill up with a bunch of info.

Looks good :D Perhaps horizontal would also be a possibility ? with just icons perhaps ?

Some screenshot of my new Dungeon/Tomb/Cript, I tried to make it look egpytian/persian with some treassure rooms.
I also added a dusty/sandy effect.
